Seven killed, 11 injured as private bus skids off road in Himachal's Chamba



Seven people were killed and 11 others injured after a private bus skidded off the road and met with an accident near Chalunj Mor in Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district on Saturday morning, officials said.

The accident took place at around 7.15 am under Patwar Circle Bairagarh, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC). The bus was travelling from Bairagarh towards Chamba when it met with the accident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the deaths and expressed his wishes for the speedy recovery of those injured in the incident.

“The loss of lives due to a mishap in Chamba, Himachal Pradesh, is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. May those injured recover at the earliest,” the Prime Minister’s Office posted on X.

Private bus carrying 18 people crashes near Chamba

Chamba Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Dinesh Sharma said the bus had 18 people on board when the accident occurred.

“We received information about this accident at 7:15 AM today. A private bus that was coming from Bairagarh to Chamba met with an accident just after covering 5 kilometers. There were a total of 18 people on board, out of which 7 died on the spot. The other 11 injured individuals were sent for treatment with the help of local people. Postmortem of the deceased is being conducted. Further enquiry is ongoing.”

The injured were taken for medical treatment with the assistance of local residents, while postmortem examinations of those who died were being conducted, police said.

Authorities have begun an investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the bus skidding off the road. Further details about the cause of the accident were awaited.

Himachal CM Sukhu expresses condolences

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu also expressed condolences to the families of those who died in the accident and directed the district administration to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured.

Sukhu posted on X, “The news of the demise of 7 people and injuries to 11 others in the bus accident near Chaluj Morh on the Tisa-Bairagarh route in Chamba district is extremely heartbreaking. I extend my deepest condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones in this tragic accident. May God grant a place at His divine feet to the souls of the departed and bestow strength upon the bereaved families to bear this immense sorrow.”

“Instructions have been issued to the district administration to ensure that all the injured are immediately admitted to the nearest hospitals and proper arrangements are made for their treatment. I pray to God for the swift recovery of all the injured,” he added.

The district administration has been instructed to coordinate the treatment of the injured and make arrangements for their medical care.

Heavy rain raises concerns over road conditions

The accident comes amid heavy rainfall in several parts of Himachal Pradesh, with authorities warning residents and travellers about difficult weather conditions.

Meteorological Centre Shimla Director Shobhit Katiyar warned of slippery roads and reduced visibility in affected areas. He also cautioned about the possibility of damaged structures as well as damage to agricultural and horticultural crops due to the adverse weather.

Katiyar advised people to avoid unnecessary travel and exercise caution while travelling through areas affected by heavy rain.

Public advised to avoid landslide-prone areas

The weather department official also urged residents to stay away from rivers, streams and areas vulnerable to landslides, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
