2 min readMumbaiFeb 24, 2026 09:58 AM IST More than 19 years after his arrest, the Bombay High Court on Monday granted bail to Faisal Ataur Rahman Shaikh, who was serving a life sentence in the 2006 Aurangabad arms haul case. Shaikh had remained behind bars despite being acquitted last year in the 2006 Mumbai train blasts case, after the High Court set aside the 2015 special court verdict that had awarded him and four others the death penalty and sentenced seven others to life imprisonment. He could not be released as he had not secured relief in the Aurangabad arms haul case. A division bench of Justices Bharati H Dangre and Manjusha A Deshpande allowed Shaikh’s plea seeking bail pending the hearing and final disposal of his appeal against conviction in the arms haul case. The detailed order is awaited. Image Source : X Representational pic In a shocking incident, eight minors drowned while taking bath in ponds in two different villages in Bihar’s Aurangabad district during ‘Jivitputrika’ festival on Wednesday. Seven were girls among the deceased. Four people each drowned in two separate ponds in Kushaha village in Madanpur block and Itahat village in Barun block. The victims have been identified as Anku Kumari (15), Nisha Kumari (12), Chulbul Kumari (13), Lazo Kumari (15), Rashi Kumari (18), Pankaj Kumar (8), Sonali Kumari (13), Nilam Kumari (12) and Rakhi Kumari (12).  “The incidents took place when the victims along with their family members went to the ponds to take a holy bath on the occasion of ‘Jivitputrika’ festival, during which women fast for the well-being of their children,” said District Magistrate (DM) Srikant Shastri. “Officials concerned immediately reached the spots and retrieved them from the ponds and took them to the nearest hospitals, where doctors declared them dead,” the official added. 7 Dead After Massive Fire In Maharashtra’s Aurangabad, Probe On

Mumbai: Seven people were killed after a massive fire broke out in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar today. Officials said that three women, two men and two children were killed in the blaze. The fire started in a tailoring shop around 4 am, creating panic in neighborhood. Firefighters rushed to the scene and managed to extinguish the flames, but seven people had died in the fire by then. Manoj Lohiya, the Police Commissioner of Sambhaji Nagar, said the fire started in the Alam Tailors shop. Residents inhabited the upper floors of the building. While the fire did not reach those living spaces, it is suspected that the victims may have succumbed to smoke inhalation. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire. An altercation between two communities in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city (previously Aurangabad), sparked by a dispute over a temple loudspeaker’s volume, allegedly led to a State transport bus being pelted with stones on Tuesday night. Although police intervened and dispersed the crowd, no arrests have been made. Two cases have been registered, one based on a complaint by a resident against seven individuals, including a woman, under Sections 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), 141, 143, 149 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting) of the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the Bombay Police Act. Another case was registered following a complaint lodged by a constable against two identified and 30-40 unidentified persons for charges including rioting and disobedience to a public servant’s order. Notices have been issued to the accused. “A quarrel took place between members of two communities over the volume of a loudspeaker at the temple located in the area.
