2 min readMumbaiJun 24, 2026 01:18 AM IST The District Sessions Court in Nashik on Tuesday granted anticipatory bail to Kalpana Kharat, wife of self-styled godman Ashok Kharat, in connection with an alleged land fraud and black magic case. Kalpana is named an accused in a case filed in Sinnar police station for offences including cheating, criminal intimidation of the Indian Penal Code and sections of the Maharashtra Prevention & Eradication of Human Sacrifice and other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, 2013. The complaint relates to a land plot spread over 16.5 acres. The owners of the land wanted to sell the land in 2003 and had met Kharat, who dealt with land deals. Kharat allegedly told the owners that someone had died by suicide in a well on the land. The allegations in the FIR are that Kharat first performed some rituals at the spot and subsequently prepared a sale deed for the land, showing that he had purchased it for less than the market value rate. MUMBAI: A sessions court on Thursday denied anticipatory bail to businessman Sudhir Valia, a director of Suraksha Asset Reconstruction Ltd, in a ₹1,000-crore fraud case that also involves former Yes Bank managing director and chief executive Rana Kapoor, holding that the gravity of the allegations warranted custodial interrogation. The Kerala High Court on Friday dismissed the anticipatory bail plea of Dr. M.K. Ram in connection with the death of Nithin Raj, a first-year BDS student of Kannur Medical College, Anjarakandy. The student had allegedly committed suicide on the college campus in April, when Dr. Ram was the head of the Dental Anatomy department. Dr. Ram had challenged the order of the Special Judge under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, Thalassery, which had denied him anticipatory bail. He was accused of abetting the student’s suicide and charged under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the SC/ST Act. He argued that allegations of instigation were baseless and there was no prima facie evidence that he intimidated or humiliated the student in public. In his plea for pre-arrest bail, he submitted that the student had borrowed ₹15,000 through a loan app and had failed to repay it, and that harassment by the operators led to his suicide. Sharma is accused of being a key conspirator in facilitating illegal sale of a land worth crores allegedly linked to the Pearl Group that was subject to restrictions and could not be transferred without approval from court-appointed Justice RM Lodha Committee overseeing investor recovery. Investigators allege that Sharma, a senior revenue official who was aware of those restrictions from earlier correspondence with the Justice RM Lodha Committee, conspired with revenue officials and private individuals to get a “red-ink stay entry removed from revenue records”, enabling the land’s sale. A Bench of Justices Sandeep Mehta and Vijay Bishnoi denied bail to RTI activist Rakesh Kumar Behl and his aide, and questioned their authority to monitor the road construction work. Justice Mehta observed, “RTI activism has become a new business. The Central government has issued funds, it will take care of the construction of the road. You are nobody. So-called RTI activist!
