K.R. Market vendors go on bandh over new parking arrangements

A view of K.R. Market in Bengaluru on Tuesday. | Photo Credit: SUDHAKARA JAIN The iconic K.R. Market in the heart of the city wore a deserted look on Tuesday, with empty carts, fewer customers, and an eerie silence at a place where the buzz never ends. The scene was the result of a bandh called by the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Green Brigade (KRRSGB). The bandh was organised against the recent parking arrangements at K.R. Market, with protesters arguing that the changes have severely disrupted the functioning of the market and have affected farmers, traders, and street vendors. For many street vendors, the issue goes beyond logistics and directly threatens their livelihoods. They alleged that civic officials had asked them to vacate their original vending spots and relocate inside the market, which would also require them to pay more money. Lakshmi, a flower vendor, said, “They (the corporation) destroyed the place where we earn our livelihood. How do they expect us to buy a spot inside and then sell there? We will incur …

Shivakumar ends Karnataka’s NITI Aayog boycott, to attend PM Modi-led meet today | Bangalore News

In a break from the Congress government’s recent practice of staying away from the annual NITI Aayog governing council meetings, Karnataka’s new chief minister, D K Shivakumar, will attend the 11th annual meeting, to be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday in New Delhi. Shivakumar, who has been in Delhi over the last two days, said on Wednesday night that he was trying to meet Modi and would attend the NITI Aayog meeting as well. “I am participating in the NITI Aayog meeting. The PM had posted a congratulatory message on social media soon after I became the CM and he has said that he will extend full cooperation. We will work together,” he said. In 2024 then CM Siddaramaiah boycotted the NITI Aayog governing council meeting as a mark of protest against the alleged neglect of the state in the Union budget. “We don’t feel Kannadigas are heard, and hence there is no point in attending the NITI Aayog meeting,” Siddaramaiah had said on social media. Last year, the CM did not …

BJP alleges irregularities in Bengaluru waste tender, urges Governor to order probe | Bangalore News

3 min readBengaluruJun 10, 2026 06:33 PM IST Alleging massive irregularities in the tender process for the integrated solid waste management (ISWM) project within the Greater Bengaluru Authority limits, the BJP has petitioned the Karnataka Governor Thawarchand Gehlot to direct an independent inquiry. Addressing a news conference before submitting a petition to the Governor, Leader of Opposition R Ashoka said that the ISWM tender for both the North and South packages was awarded to a single company for 30 years, despite objections from the Finance Department. The Department had advised reducing the tender duration to 10 years and had also highlighted the flaws in the tender, Ashoka said. Moreover, the tender was awarded to a blacklisted company, he alleged. Among the discrepancies in the tender highlighted in the petition were variations in the tipping fees fixed per tonne. Tipping fees include charges for primary and secondary collection, transportation, processing, and disposal. As per the approved DPR for ISWM, the initial tipping fee estimate was around Rs 1,398 per tonne. “Subsequently, based on recommendations attributed to …

Shivam Associates collected Rs 2,400 crore, diverted Rs 55 to personal accounts: police | Bangalore News

3 min readBengaluruJun 8, 2026 12:07 PM IST The Karnataka Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) said Sunday its investigation into the alleged multi-crore fraud committed by Belagavi-based Shivam Associates has disclosed that the firm collected about Rs 2,400 crore from more than 40,000 investors. In May, the Belagavi police arrested Shivanand Neelannavar, the promoter of Shivam Associates, in connection with the Rs 4,500-crore investment scam, under which the firm offered annual interest rates of 36 to 60 per cent to investors. Shivam Associates was closed after a complaint was filed at Malmaruti Police Station in Belagavi under the provisions of the Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes (BUDS) Act and the Karnataka Protection of Interest of Depositors in Financial Establishments (KPID) Act. Later, the case was handed over to CID. Bheemashankar S Guled, Deputy Inspector-General of Police, CID, said they were forced to hold a press conference as people were still investing money even though the accounts of Shivam Associates had been frozen. “Even after the fraud has come to light, people have invested about Rs …

Karnataka Congress says all is well day after Ramalinga Reddy sends resignation over WhatsApp | Bangalore News

3 min readBengaluruJun 6, 2026 07:01 PM IST The Congress party on Saturday indicated a resolution to a crisis in the Karnataka government triggered by the resignation of senior minister Ramalinga Reddy over a refusal of his demand for the Bengaluru Development minister portfolio in the 13-member cabinet of D K Shivakumar. Senior Congress leader Randeep Surjewala and Chief Minister D K Shivakumar indicated the resolution of the crisis even as Reddy did not officially speak on the matter. However, the leaders did not indicate any changes in the portfolios allocated to the ministers. Reddy had publicly announced his resignation on Friday — two days after the new CM and his cabinet took their oaths. “There has been some misunderstanding. He shall continue to work as a loyal soldier and minister of the party,” the AICC general secretary in-charge of Karnataka Randeep Surjewala said in a media briefing on Saturday afternoon. “Ramalinga Reddy is an asset of the Congress party. He has been in politics since 1973. He has been a minister many times. His …

Shivakumar set to take oath as Karnataka CM in lowkey ceremony | Bangalore News

Karnataka is set to witness the oath-taking ceremony of the 34th Chief Minister of the state, D K Shivakumar, 64, and the first batch of around 10 ministers —including Siddaramaiah’s son Yathindra Siddaramaiah, 45, an MLC — on Wednesday. The oath ceremony will be held with minimal fanfare at the state Lok Bhavan with a crowd of around 2,000 in attendance. Shivakumar opted for a lowkey swearing-in at the behest of the Congress leadership, which decided on May 26 to ask Siddaramaiah, 78, the popular CM of the state, to make way for the younger Shivakumar. The probable list of 10 ministers who are likely to be finalised for oath taking along with Shivakumar include several seniors from the Siddaramaiah cabinet and two young ministers — Priyank Kharge (a Dalit and son of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge) and Krishna Byre Gowda (Vokkaliga). The Congress is also expected to choose between veteran K H Muniyappa and his daughter Roopakala Shashidhar (both Dalits), who is a fresh ministerial aspirant, and Yathindra Siddaramaiah as its youth choices, sources …

Bengaluru Metro’s Blue Line can run fully on solar power, save Rs 61 crore a year: IISc report | Bangalore News

3 min readBengaluruMay 20, 2026 08:06 PM IST A report from Bengaluru’s Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has said it is feasible for the Blue Line metro (currently under construction) to be powered entirely by solar energy, leading to crores of rupees in energy savings in the coming years. The report of the study conducted in collaboration with Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) from August last year to March 2026 has stated that both phases 2A and 2B of the nearly 60-km-long Blue Line can be powered by solar, while the land required would be already owned by BMRCL. The line will stretch from Central Silk Board to Kempegowda International Airport. This was done with the help of simulation reports from BMRCL, modelling solar energy panels, and other systems across 30 stations of the Blue Line, as well as the elevated viaduct and roofs of the train depots. According to the report, published earlier this month, the rooftops of the Blue Line metro stations alone cover an area of 1.09 lakh square metres, accommodating …

We will convey to the public the assurances we fulfilled at the gathering,” he added. Asked if the party is using the occasion as a show of strength amid the alleged power tussle between CM Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D K Shivakumar, the home minister dismissed the suggestion and replied, “We are organising it to tell the people that we walked the talk.” Meanwhile, the event, which has been named ‘Sadhana Samavesha’, has attracted criticism from the BJP. Leader of Opposition R Ashok slammed it as a Congress party convention. “For namesake, they have put my name in the invitation, along with that of Union Ministers (from Karnataka). Who will attend this?” he asked. The …
