Rad Power Bikes’ batteries are a fire risk and shouldn’t be used, CPSC warns

The US Consumer Protection Safety Commission issued a stark warning about some of Rad Power Bikes’ e-bike batteries Monday, linking them to dozens of fires and saying they “pose a risk of serious injury and death.” The batteries can “unexpectedly ignite and explode,” especially when water or debris leaks in to cells or the harness, the agency says. CPSC says there have been 31 fires, including 12 reports of property damage totaling $734,500, some of which occurred when the battery was not charging and the bike was in storage or not in use. No injuries were reported as a result of the fires. The following models are included in the CPSC warning: RadWagon 4, RadCity HS 4, RadRover High Step 5, RadCity Step Thru 3, RadRover Step Thru 1, RadRunner 2, RadRunner 1, RadRunner Plus, and RadExpand 5. According to the agency, the battery model number (HL-RP-S1304 or RP-1304) is printed on a label on the back or rear of the battery. All the batteries were manufactured in China. iPhone Supplier TDK Readies Batteries Geared for Thin AI Gadgets

TDK is readying a new generation of batteries to power smartphones through AI tasks at a time that major client Apple Inc. is also preparing to launch a slimmer handset. The Tokyo-based component maker will begin shipping its third iteration of silicon-anode batteries by the end of June, Chief Executive Officer Noboru Saito said. That’s ahead of TDK’s original schedule for shipments in the September quarter and may give smartphone makers enough time to use these cells in thinner models launching this year, he said. “We’ve made good progress, and we’re shipping them very soon,” he said in an interview. “Some handset makers might be able to use the new battery in their product one generation early.” TDK’s battery technology is helping the world’s biggest smartphone makers slim down their gadgets without shortening battery run times. Its latest lithium-ion batteries use silicon for anodes instead of the graphite commonly used, and can pack 15 percent more energy into the same space compared with conventional rechargeable battery packs. Samsung Electronics Co. this week rolled out the 5.9-millimeter-thin Galaxy S25 …

DJI now makes a very powerful car charger for its big ass batteries

DJI now makes a very powerful car charger for its big ass batteries

DJI has quietly introduced a powerful new car charger for its giant portable batteries. The $299 / €269 Power 1kW Super Fast Car Charger can charge the company’s expanding lineup of power stations at up to 1000W from your car’s alternator when the engine is running. This new class of (nearly) do-it-yourself alternator chargers are having a moment now that the most popular makers of solar generators and power stations have embraced DC-to-DC chargers. I wouldn’t have survived without one when remote working from my van last summer. Once the Power 1kW is mounted inside your vehicle and connected to the car’s battery via the included 5m (16 feet 5 inches) fused cable, it then connects to the proprietary SDC port of the dongle-happy DJI Power 1000 power station I recently reviewed. It’ll also charge DJI’s 2048Wh Power 2000 Expansion Batteries when daisy-chained together with SDC cables for up to 11kWh of stackable storage capacity. The Power 1kW can also be configured to reverse-charge your car’s battery to prevent battery drain. At full power the DJI Power 1kW …

Honda has a plan to build solid-state batteries for EVs

Honda has a plan to build solid-state batteries for EVs

Honda set up a demonstration facility in Japan to show off its plans to mass-produce solid-state batteries at lower costs, which could be crucial to unlocking higher-range, longer-lasting electric vehicles for the future. Solid-state batteries have been elusive for many companies due to the complexity of scaling up production. The technology swaps out the liquid electrolytes found in current lithium-ion batteries with dry conductive materials, promising higher energy density and longer lifespans. But it will require a whole new production process to be successful. Roll pressing of cathode for solid-state batteries.Image: Honda Honda says it is accelerating research at its new 27,000 square-meter demo facility set up in Sakura City, Japan, and is shortening the time required to make a single unit. The site has full-scale equipment that is split between three buildings: the first for cathode formation and cell assembly; the second for anode formation; and the third for electrolyte activation and module assembly. The plan includes using a continuous inline mixer that Honda says is “three times faster” than typical cell batch processing. …
