Watch what it’s like to handle an overturned truck full of burning batteries

A truck full of lithium-ion batteries was knocked over near the Port of Los Angeles on September 26th, exploded, and was left to burn for days — interrupting traffic on highways, and a bridge and shutting down port terminals. A local towing company, Pepe’s Towing Service, caught the explosion on camera and vlogged the incident for days until it was time for them to haul the remnants away. Pepe’s Tow Service owner Josh Acosta uploaded a lengthy video today chronicling the point of explosion, the long wait as the Fire Department let the batteries burn, and the process of lifting the container full of burnt batteries to transport. In the video, we see what looks like stacks of batteries with liquid cooling pipes between each layer. Image: Pepe’s Towing Service Image: Pepe’s Towing Service Image: Pepe’s Towing Service In a phone call with The Verge, Acosta says the battery is one “giant container-sized battery” that “does not come apart.” He believes it could be used in buildings for backup power. According to Acosta, the battery …

A truck full of batteries has been burning for almost a full day, shutting down ports in LA

A truck full of lithium-ion batteries is burning in Los Angeles, shutting down ports and a bridge. It’s not clear what the batteries were for — but LA’s Vincent Thomas Bridge, leading to the Port of Los Angeles and the next-door Port of Long Beach, has been shut down for at least 15 hours now while local firefighters let the truck burn. State Route 47 was also closed in both directions as of a couple of hours ago. Amazingly, a local towing company caught the explosion on camera from a nearby drone: Both the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach have shut down a number of terminals while the fire continues to burn. As of 12:10PM PT on Friday, the truck was still on fire, and both the ports and bridge were still closed, Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) spokesperson Ren Medina told The Verge. Firefighters are nearby and are actively monitoring the situation; as of 10PM PT on Thursday, the fire was expected to last “at least another 24-48 hours.” …

All the new EcoFlow products.Image: EcoFlow The Power Kit v2 is a follow-up to its original all-in-one power management system I reviewed 18 months ago. The kits are designed to power everything from an off-grid cabin to a small campervan, without the complexity of having to cobble together all the required components and wiring yourself. EcoFlow says the new 5kVA 48V Power Kits are improved for RVs, quieter — a recurring complaint with the original — and offer even more storage capacity. The expanded 45kWh battery limit is enough to boondock for a week or longer if your rig is big enough to store …

iPhone 15 Series Offers Longer Battery Cycle Lifespan Than Previous Models, Apple Says

Apple has revealed that the iPhone 15 series have a longer battery cycle lifespan than the company’s previous smartphone models. The company’s documentation for its batteries has been updated to state that the iPhone 15 series can retain 80 percent of its battery capacity at twice as many charge cycles as its predecessors. With the upcoming iOS 17.4 update, the company’s latest smartphone models will also be able to display the phone’s battery “health” in the Settings app in addition to charge cycles. The company on Tuesday updated its battery and performance support document (via MacRumors) with updated battery cycle lifespan figures for the iPhone 15 series. “Batteries of iPhone 15 models are designed to retain 80 percent of their original capacity at 1000 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions,” the document states. On the other hand, the iPhone 14 and earlier models will retain 80 percent of its charge capacity at 500 charge cycles, according to Apple. Hamas’ Underground Spy Centre With High-Tech Data Servers, Industrial Batteries Near UNRWA HQ: IDF

Published on Feb 11, 2024 11:35 AM IST Days after accusing UNRWA officials of participating in the October 7 attack, the Israel Army claimed to have found a Hamas intelligence centre right below the UN aid agency’s main headquarters in Gaza. The IDF said that the intel centre housed in a tunnel had data servers, and electrical infrastructure hooked up to the UNRWA HQ. Asus’ ROG Flow gaming laptop line gets bigger batteries

The hits from CES 2023 just keep coming. Asus is rolling out a bevy of new hardware announcements for its ROG gaming brand, and among those are refreshed models of its Flow lineup. The Flow X13, X16, and Z13 are all getting hardware improvements, including the latest processors and mobile GPUs — but perhaps the most notable improvement with one of these gaming laptops is its larger battery. Asus’ Flow line is relatively unique among gaming laptops, sporting 2-in-1 displays and — in the case of the X16 and Z13 — compatibility with an Asus-made external GPU to boost gaming performance. However, the most recent iterations of these laptops suffered from abysmal battery life, something Asus is trying to amend with the new models of the X13. The ROG Flow Z13 will still feature its Microsoft Surface-like detachable keyboard.Image: Asus The battery on the Flow X13 is jumping to 75Whr, up from 62Whr on the 2021 model. In reviews from my colleagues, Monica Chin wrote that her “one complaint” about the Flow X13 was its battery …

Tesla Energy electric service built from Powerwall owners’ batteries goes live in Texas

Tesla launched a new power utility provider service in Texas this week that lets select locals with home Powerwall backup batteries sell excess energy back to the grid. To qualify, residents must live in areas that allow for retail choice — Tesla’s site mentions the Dallas and Houston metro areas specifically — and, for now, will need to wait for an invitation to join through the Tesla app. Those who join the new Tesla Electric service will become part of an automated system that sells energy from owners’ Powerwalls to the grid and vice-versa when most viable. And when pulling from the grid, Tesla provides offsets from renewable energy sources. The Tesla app with the new Electric service.Image: Tesla This comes as Texas is easing out of a summer heatwave and dealing with a crypto mining expansion that caused the state to break its peak power demand record at over 78 gigawatts of electricity. The state’s grid operator, Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), asked residents in July to conserve power at the time, and …
