BJP set to sweep Bengal Rajya Sabha polls as TMC factions decide against contesting

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to win all three Rajya Sabha seats from West Bengal in the July 24 bypolls, as both factions of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) have decided not to contest, people familiar with the matter said. The Election Commission announced the bypolls on Monday. (Sansad TV/ANI) The BJP controls 208 of the state’s 294 assembly seats. Of the 80 TMC candidates who won the April elections, at least 65 have joined the rebel camp headed by Ritabrata Banerjee, whom the Speaker recognised as the leader of the opposition in June. “The question of fielding candidates for Rajya Sabha does not arise because the numbers don’t work out,” Ritabrata Banerjee said. TMC Rajya Sabha member Dola Sen, a Mamata Banerjee loyalist, alleged that Ritabrata Banerjee and the MLAs in his camp engineered the divide only to help BJP secure more seats in Parliament. “Why will they contest? They are with the BJP. They want all the perks and facilities they enjoyed while TMC was in power. All they have to do …

In December 2025, PM Modi praised him for having distinguished himself as a hardworking worker when Nabin was appointed as the BJP’s working president. (File Image) “This simplicity and straightforwardness are a matter of pride for every BJP worker…” Modi said, sharing the post of Piyush Padmakar, an old associate of Nabin. Padmakar wrote the post on Sunday about Nabin’s humility and how he lived frugally as a student despite his father being a legislator in Bihar. “…Even then, Nitin was the most disciplined and sociable among the four friends. If there were fights among us, it was Nitin who would resolve them,” Padmkar wrote. ALSO READ | Parvesh Verma’s ‘remember me?’ retort to Arvind Kejriwal’s ‘who are you’ remark …

Kolkata trams may return under BJP; survey ordered, says transport minister

Kolkata’s electricity-driven trams, started by the British in 1873 and shut down in 2024 under the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, except on two routes, may make a comeback under the Bharatiya Janata Party, transport minister Arjun Singh said on Sunday. A public sector undertaking (PSU) under the ministry of railways, RITES offers engineering and consultancy services in transport infrastructure, including roads, airports and railways. “There used to be 40 routes during the Left Front government but only a limited number of trams currently operate on two routes: one from Gariahat to Esplanade via Park …
