Local pitch, softer tone, welfare focus helped BJP sweep Bengal

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) bid to shed the “Bohiragoto” (outsider) tag, success in stoking the fear of illegal immigrants, and a campaign that avoided personal comments on West Bengal chief minister (CM) Mamata Banerjee, even while highlighting misgovernance, worked in West Bengal, giving the party its first-ever electoral success in the state, party leaders said. BJP workers in Kolkata celebrate the party’s success in the Bengal assembly elections on Monday. Axis My India won’t release exit poll results for West Bengal elections, says Pradeep Gupta

The Axis-My India exit poll projection for West Bengal is not coming out, according to the organisation’s founder Pradeep Gupta, who said that the voters were choosing to stay mum on who they voted for. Pradeep Gupta (X/ Pradeep Gupta) In an interview with NDTV on Wednesday, Gupta said that the voters were not responding to their survey. “See, the method of Axis My India is talking to people face to face. And when we tried to talk after the first phase, about 60-70 per cent of the people had their lips sealed. They were not even ready to say yes or no,” Gupta told NDTV. “No one is ready to talk to anyone in the context of elections. So, as long as our sample is not representative, on the basis of a 20-30 per cent sample, we do not believe it is right to predict any number. For that, we will try once again Thursday. Maybe now that the elections have been held, people will be more relaxed,” he added. However, Axis My India …

Keeping up with UP: Will women help BJP retain power

Keeping up with UP: Will women help BJP retain power

In March 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi credited women for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s victories in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, and Manipur assembly elections. “Wherever women voters outnumber men, the BJP has a landslide victory,” he said. The turnout of women was higher than that of men in 17 of the 80 constituencies in Uttar Pradesh in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. (ANI/Representative) According to Lokniti-CSDS, an overwhelming majority of Hindu upper-caste women voted for the BJP in the 2022 assembly polls. Successive governments launched special welfare schemes for women, but perhaps lacked a strategy to reap electoral benefits. The BJP began cultivating the women’s vote bank after returning to power at the Centre in 2014, through welfare measures such as Ujjwala (LPG connections for Below Poverty Line families), connecting toilets to women’s dignity, free ration, and direct cash transfers. The party’s soldiers went door-to-door with “Modi’s guarantees,” including women’s security. As women started rewarding the party, the BJP gave more tickets to them in national elections–38 in 2014, 55 in 2019, and 68 …
