Biomedical waste dumped across Katraj Ghat forest prompts cleanliness drive

PUNE: Extensive dumping of garbage, including large quantities of biomedical waste, across forested stretches of Katraj ghat has triggered environmental and public health concerns, prompting plans for a large-scale cleanup drive involving citizens, activists, civic authorities and the forest department. Mechanised cleaning operations in Katraj Ghat will begin on June 20, followed by citizen-driven cleanliness drive on June 21, wherein nearly 500 volunteers are expected to participate. Thousands of kilograms of garbage have been dumped there, including biomedical and medical waste. We have identified 52 chronic dumping spots within a 5 km stretch. Medical waste is scattered across the forest, creating a serious threat to wildlife, the environment and public health.” Singh said that his team has been working continuously for the last few years to remove the accumulated waste from the forest area. MoU signed to protect bio-medical research through patent and IPR filing

Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to protect academic and industrial bio-medical research and development projects through intellectual property filings and patent. Under the agreement, ICMR and TNSCST would jointly protect the exclusive rights of biomedical innovations originating from academic institutions and initiate seamless technology transfer, a press release stated. They would jointly facilitate the process of intellectual property rights filing related to biomedical innovations covering patentability search reports and patent drafting and filing through the Medical Innovations Patent Mitra initiative of ICMR. They would also collaborate to connect inventors with potential investors to enable effective technology transfer and commercialisation of biomedical patents. The MoU was signed by S. Vincent, Member Secretary, TNSCST, and Rajiv Bahl, Secretary, Department of Health Research, and Director General, ICMR. MUMBAI: The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has issued show-cause notices to KEM Hospital and BYL Nair Hospital after finding lapses in the handling of biomedical waste, following complaints from staff and visitors about hazardous dumping practices. MPCB send notices to BMC hospitals over biomedical waste violations In an RTI response dated November 25 to activist Chetan Kothari, the MPCB confirmed that its officials had inspected both hospitals after receiving email complaints in September, and subsequently initiated legal action through its compliance module. Kothari said he was alerted by hospital employees and visitors about biomedical waste being dumped “in an unsafe and unhygienic manner”. “I filed the RTI to understand what action was taken. We had assumed the problem was limited to Cooper Hospital, but it extends to other BMC-run hospitals as well. It happens far too often,” he said. Andhra Pradesh: SVIMS ties up with DEBEL for development of biomedical devices

Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) University, Tirupati, inked a pact with Defence Bio-Engineering and Electro Medical Laboratory (DEBEL) for training, research and development of biomedical devices. The Bengaluru-based laboratory functions under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO, Ministry of Defence). The tie-up, signed between SVIMS Director and Vice-Chancellor B. Vengamma and DEBEL Director T.M. Kotresh at the latter’s campus on Saturday, is considered a path-breaking development in the arena of manufacture of biomedical devices in the country. It may be recalled that former DRDO Director G. Satish Reddy and MP (Tirupati) M. Gurumoorthy had taken special care to get the pact through.
