Bombay HC dismisses PIL over the omission of ‘Chhatrapati’

The Bombay High Court on Thursday dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) petition filed by an NGO, seeking a stay on the theatrical release of the upcoming film Raja Shivaji starring Riteish Deshmukh. About the PIL The PIL was reportedly filed by the NGO named Sree Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Foundation, taking objection to the omission of the honorific title ‘Chhatrapati’ from the name of the movie. Vidyavihar crash: HC seeks reply on plea to cancel bail of minor driver’s father

MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court on Monday issued notice on a plea by the widow of Dhrumil Patel, who was killed in the February 5 Vidyavihar crash, seeking cancellation of bail granted to the minor driver’s father, and asked the accused and the State to file responses. Dhrumil Patel was killed and his wife, Minal, was injured in the accident. The petition by Minal Patel challenges the March 4 sessions court order that granted bail to the father of a 17-year-old boy accused of driving the car involved in the fatal accident. The High Court has sought replies from the respondents, initiating proceedings on whether the bail granted to the father warrants interference. The accident took place near Somaiya College in Vidyavihar, where a car allegedly driven by the minor rammed into a scooter carrying Dhrumil Patel, 33, and his wife. Both were seriously injured, and Dhrumil later succumbed to his injuries. An FIR registered at Tilak Nagar police station named both the minor driver and his father, the car owner, as accused. A magistrate …

HC sets aside rejection of US firm’s patent plea over lack of reasons, orders fresh decision

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has quashed orders denying a patent to US-based Huntington Alloys Corporation, holding that the authorities’ conclusion that the invention was linked to atomic energy was unjustified and could not be sustained in law. Bombay High Court (HT Photo) The company had moved the court against a November 2020 decision of the deputy controller of patents and a subsequent April 2021 order of the Department of Atomic Energy, both of which refused its application for the investigation of an “Ultra Supercritical Boiler Header Alloy and Method of Preparation”. At the core of the dispute was whether the invention fell within the restricted domain of atomic energy under the Patents Act. The firm maintained that its technology—an alloy developed for high-temperature boiler systems—had no nexus with atomic energy and was wrongly classified. The proposed alloy, comprising nickel, cobalt and chromium, is designed for use in boiler header pipes operating under extreme temperatures. The company argued that its composition enhances durability, strength and weldability, making it suitable for long-term industrial use. During the hearing, …

HC rejects gangster Abu Salem Abdul Qayoom Ansari’s plea for immediate release| India News

The Bombay high court on Wednesday rejected gangster Abu Salem Abdul Qayoom Ansari’s plea seeking his immediate release from jail, claiming that he had completed his 25-year jail term on March 31, 2025, in the 1993 Mumbai serial bombings case. Abu Salem Abdul Qayoom Ansari was extradited from Portugal. A bench of justices AS Gadkari and Kamal Khata said Ansari was yet to complete the actual prison term of 25 years and therefore his petition was premature. Ansari’s lawyer, Farhana Shah, said the Supreme Court in 2022 upheld her client’s plea that he cannot be sentenced to a term of over 25 years in view of the assurance given to Portugal, where he was extradited from. She added that the Supreme Court had ordered that he be released on completing the 25-year prison term. Ansari filed the petition in February 2025, claiming he was entitled to remission of the time he spent as an undertrial prisoner from October 12, 2005, as the Supreme Court recognised. The plea added that he had earned regular and special …

Authorities sealed their factory, storage facility and office in Fort bringing their business to a standstill, claiming that the premises were being used without proper authorisation and in violation of FSS regulations and a July 2025 government order. Goods worth around ₹32 crore, meant for export, were also seized, halting operations. During a February hearing, senior advocate …

Bombay HC orders murder trial for 8 Mumbai cops in 2014 custodial death case

A two-judge bench of the Bombay High Court on Monday upheld a 2022 special court order directing that eight police personnel stand trial for murder in the 2014 custodial death of 25-year-old Agnelo Valdaris. The High Court observed, “Prima facie it appears that since Agnello was severally beaten up in the illegal police custody, he had sustained various injuries which were opined as more than 12 hours and 24 to 96 hours old.”It further held that the officers were “involved in this episode” and that there was “no reason to treat the impugned order (of the special court) as illegal or erroneous.” Valdaris and three others, including a minor, were detained by the Wadala Government Railway Police on the night of April 15, 2014, in connection with a theft case. Police had claimed that Valdaris died on April 18 after being hit by a train while allegedly escaping custody around 11 30 am. Bombay HC Seeks Answers as BMC Flips Stand on 27,000 Sq Metre Worli Land

3 min readMar 28, 2026 08:21 AM IST The Bombay High Court on Friday sought to know the reasons for BMC’s change in stand after the civic body said it required the entire over 27,000 square metres instead of 17,756 sq metres for the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Worli. The HC directed the BMC to file an affidavit stating reasons for the change in stand. Earlier, the HC had allowed BMC to utilise the available plot of 17,756 square metres and had said it would later examine how the reservation for a larger area of 27,698 square metres was reduced to nearly 17,000 square metres to build a transit camp for a slum rehabilitation project. Last month, the high court had stopped the construction of the transit buildings, noting that the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) had allowed it despite BMC objections, terming it a “systematic design” to favour the developer. On March 23, the HC had asked the BMC and SRA officials to jointly visit the site to identify the area of over 17,000 …
