Filmmaker Suneel Darshan, who has been embroiled in a legal battle with Sunny Deol for over a decade after the actor allegedly walked out of Darshan’s film Good Morning India in 2008, is back to seeking legal recourse. Sunny Deol The filmmaker had originally sued Deol for ₹20 crore, alleging losses after the actor walked out of the project. His petition was dismissed in a 2015 judgement. However, on Thursday, the Bombay High Court allowed Darshan to restore his appeal against the earlier judgement, while imposing a cost of ₹15, 000. The working relationship between Darshan and Deol spanned three films — Inteqaam (1988), Lootere (1993), Ajay (1996) — before eventually turning bitter. The Centre on Thursday clarified that an Indian passport has never been regarded as conclusive proof of citizenship, stating that no new policy has been introduced and that the legal position has remained unchanged for decades. The clarification came a day after the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated during a media briefing that a passport is primarily a travel document and should not be treated as definitive proof of Indian citizenship. The remarks triggered criticism from Opposition leaders, prompting the government to explain the legal basis for its position. The government said the distinction is rooted in the Passports Act, 1967, and has also been upheld by judicial pronouncements, including a Bombay High Court ruling in 2013. The legal battle between producer Vashu Bhagnani’s Pooja Entertainment and Ramesh Taurani-led Tips Industries has intensified dramatically. Pooja Entertainment has filed a Rs 400 crore lawsuit before the Bombay High Court against Tips Industries Limited, Ramesh Taurani, Kumar S Taurani and filmmaker David Dhawan over the alleged unauthorised use of songs from the 1999 blockbuster Biwi No 1 in Varun Dhawan’s upcoming film Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. The suit seeks urgent relief restraining the release, distribution, exhibition, streaming and further commercial exploitation of the film and its promotional material featuring the disputed songs, “Chunnari Chunnari” and “Ishq Sona Hai”. According to Pooja Entertainment, the makers of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai do not possess the necessary rights to use the two songs from Biwi No 1. The production house has demanded that the tracks be removed from both the film and its promotional campaigns. Sixteen years after a complaint over a joke on the show Comedy Circus Ka Jadoo led to a case against actor and TV host Shekhar Suman and comedian Bharti Singh, the Bombay High Court has quashed the FIR, bringing relief to the two artistes. Shekhar Suman The case dated back to 2010, when an FIR was filed over allegedly offensive remarks made on the Sony TV show. Apart from Suman and Singh, the channel and a scriptwriter were also named as accused. The complaint, filed by a representative of Raza Academy, alleged that Singh had cracked a joke about a Quranic verse on the show, and that Suman, who was associated with the episode, had repeated the verse. The court has now clarified that the role attributed to Shekhar and Bharti was “too remote” to bring them within the alleged offences, and that no material had been found to show deliberate or malicious intent on their part.
