Ounahi’s rebellious brace carries Morocco through to quarters

Ounahi’s rebellious brace carries Morocco through to quarters

A goal is much more than the rudimentary act of pushing a synthetic round sphere into a polypropylene net. Take Azzedine Ounahi’s 50th-minute goal in Morocco’s 3-0 rout of Canada at the FIFA World Cup, for instance. It had the finesse of cigarette smoke slipping through a cracked window. All 10 Canadian players swarmed the box when Ounahi took his shot. It had the craftsmanship of a seamstress threading a needle through a crowded eye. Between the path of the ball and the net lay three defenders and a goalkeeper. But how preposterous is it to suggest that a goal can be classified as anti-establishment? Ounahi’s was. Until then, Canada had done almost everything right. Jesse Marsch’s side had five attempts, one of which should have been tucked home by Tani Oluwaseyi. In stark contrast, Morocco’s only previous effort was Soufiane Rahimi launching a speculative strike from a distance worth just 0.02 expected goals. Morocco did little to justify taking the lead. The goal disrupted the status quo. It was another reminder that few footballers …

Harry Kane breaks Congo resistance with sublime brace as England enter last 16

Harry Kane breaks Congo resistance with sublime brace as England enter last 16

An inspired Harry Kane wrote himself into history books and the hearts of England fans forever with a pair of goals that denied what could have been one of the greatest World Cup upsets of all time. His strikes, in the space of 11 minutes, consigned the Democratic Republic of the Congo, leading the game for 69 minutes, to pure despair. As England wheeled away in celebration, Congo’s brave men – who defied a footballing powerhouse for most of the game – broke down inconsolably. But the World Cup wouldn’t forget their courage. It took one of the most lethal strikers in the world, a man inspired in the second half, a loveable man who has suffered heartbreaks in three major tournaments (World Cup and Euros), to deny them a slice of history. Those were goals that Kane scored with his will, the technique and vision just the complimenting tools. The winner could become an iconic moment in English football. Catching his breath after the match, unable to recollect the events, Kane said; “We have …

Monsoon stalled, south and east UP brace for heatwave spell | Lucknow News

4 min readLucknowJun 17, 2026 05:00 AM IST With the monsoon yet to reach Uttar Pradesh, the state is likely to witness another spell of heatwave conditions over the coming days as temperatures continue to soar across several districts, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The Met’s report on Tuesday showed a significant rise in daytime temperatures across parts of eastern UP. Banda recorded maximum temperature of 43.4 degrees Celsius on Monday, while Prayagraj touched 44°C, figuring among the hottest cities in the country. Meteorologists attributed the heat wave to a lack of significant cloud cover. “At present, there is no major weather system influencing Uttar Pradesh. In the absence of significant cloud cover, daytime radiative heating is taking place, leading to a rise in temperatures,” said IMD scientist Atul Kumar Singh. He said temperatures in parts of southern and eastern Uttar Pradesh are climatologically high during this period because the region falls within one of the country’s peak heating zones when the sun is positioned near the Tropic of Cancer. According to him, …
