Guwahati, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday laid foundation stones for four river lighthouses on the banks of the Brahmaputra, the first such infrastructure on an inland waterway in the country. Sonowal lays foundation for India’s first river lighthouses in Assam The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways kick-started the process to construct the lighthouses at Bogibeel in Dibrugarh district, Pandu in Kamrup Metropolitan, and Silghat in Nagaon district in the south bank of the river, and Biswanath Ghat in Biswanath in the north bank. Laying the foundation stone at a function here, Sonowal said these four lighthouses are located at strategic points along the Brahmaputra, which is the National Waterway-2 and one of India’s most important inland cargo and passenger corridors. The combined project outlay for all the four structures will be ₹84 crore. Each lighthouse will rise up to 20 metres with a geographical range of 14 nautical miles and a luminous range of 8–10 nautical miles, powered entirely by solar energy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu. The bridge inaugurated by PM Modi spans over the Brahmaputra River that connects Guwahati and North Guwahati.  As reported by news agency IANS, the 2.86-kilometre-long bridge was built at a cost of around Rs 3,030 crore. The 6-lane extradosed prestressed concrete (PSC) bridge connects Guwahati with North Guwahati and is the first extradosed bridge in Northeast India. The Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu Bridge cuts down travel time to 7 minutes It will cut travel time between Guwahati and North Guwahati to 7 minutes. Considering the high seismicity of the region, the bridge incorporates base isolation technology using friction pendulum bearings. The advanced technology bridge has been built with high-performance stay cables that have been used to ensure durability and long-term structural performance. To make this an architectural marvel, a Bridge Health Monitoring System (BHMS) has also been incorporated for real-time condition monitoring. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday morning set sail on river Brahmaputra on a cruise ship, as he began his interaction with students during a `Pariksha Pe Charcha` programme on the second day of his Assam visit. A total of 25 students from various schools of Assam are taking part in the event. Modi is scheduled to interact with the students for around 45 minutes aboard the three-deck `M V Charaidew 2`, officials said. He arrived at the Guwahati Gateway Terminal of the Inland Water Transport (IWT), inaugurated recently by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and moved to the ship along the floating bridge. In a letter to the Member-Secretary of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) on April 2, Golaghat town-based Apurba Ballav Goswami sought a probe into the effluent treatment practices of the Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) and its compliance with the board’s updated pollution standards. He appended a report by a private biosciences laboratory analysing a water sample reportedly collected from the NRL’s effluent treatment plant on March 11. “The results reveal an exceedance of CPCB effluent discharge standards for petroleum oil refineries under the Environment (Protection) Rules, 1986, and subsequent guidelines, with severe implications for aquatic life and the long-term health of the Dhansiri River,” the letter read. Fire breaks out on Barak Brahmaputra Express at Bihara station | Video A fire broke out on the Barak-Brahmaputra Express at Bihara station, Silchar Town in the Cachar district of Assam on early Sunday. A video emerged on social media showed a wave of smoke erupting from the Barak-Brahmaputra Express at Bihara Railway Station, leading to a delay in the train. Following the chaos due to the fire incident, the Northeast Frontier Railway clarified that the incident was caused by some break-binding issue.  The Barak-Brahmaputra Express was going from Shillong to Tinusukia when smoke, coming out from the wheels of the train, was spotted in Cachar.  There was smoke due to brake binding in the wheel of one of the sleeper coaches of train 15641, said Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Northeast Frontier Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO). But a team from National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS), Dirang has dared to do the impossible. The skilled team, led by its Director, Col Ranveer Singh Jamwal, has paddled the entire 1,040 km stretch of the mighty Brahmaputra River, and its successful completion in the first-ever attempt makes the accomplishment all the more historic. New Delhi: The Union government has “taken note” of China’s announcement of a mega dam project on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo (upper reaches of the Brahmaputra) river in the Tibet Autonomous Region, the Centre informed Parliament on Thursday. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh in a written response to a query in Rajya Sabha also said various issues relating to trans-border rivers are discussed with China under the ambit of an “institutionalised Expert Level Mechanism,” which was established in 2006, as well as through diplomatic channels. The ministry was asked whether China’s decision to construct a hydropower dam on the Brahmaputra river, which flows into India and Bangladesh, has raised concerns about its potential impact on millions of people living downstream. “The Government of India has taken note of China’s announcement of a mega dam project approved on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo (upper reaches of the Brahmaputra) River in the Tibet Autonomous Region,” he said.
