Image Source : PTI Rajnath Singh Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reacted to China’s proposed dam on Brahmaputra and said the Central government is on alert regarding China’s plan to construct a mega dam on the Brahmaputra river in Tibet, close to its border with India. The reaction came days after China announced its plan to construct the world’s largest dam on the Brahmaputra, and India said it will continue to monitor and take necessary measures to protect its interests. New Delhi has also urged Beijing to ensure that the interests of downstream states of the Brahmaputra are not harmed by activities in upstream areas. “The Indian government is on alert,” the defence minister said during an event here when asked about the dam. New Delhi: Last week China announced that it is building the world’s largest dam in Tibet – even larger than the Three Gorges Dam, which according to NASA, has slowed the Earth’s rotation by 0.06 seconds. But unlike that one, which is built in central China, the new one will be built in an environmentally-sensitive Himalayan zone in Tibet, very close to the border with India. Besides the impact on the environment, the region is geologically fragile too as it falls in a high seismic zone and hence is prone to earthquakes of a relatively higher magnitude. These are two of several concerns New Delhi has about the gigantic project planned on the Brahmaputra river – which China calls by the name Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibet. Days after Beijing’s announcement about the mega project, New Delhi responded Friday, saying India will “protect its interests”. China’s plan to build a mega dam on the Brahmaputra could make the entire ecosystem that depends on the river fragile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma warned on Wednesday, adding that India has already communicated its concern to Beijing.  Last week, the Chinese government approved the construction of the world’s largest hydropower dam, which can generate 60,000 MW of power, on the Yarlung Tsangpo River – the Chinese name for the Brahmaputra. The dam will span a gorge in the Himalayas in eastern Tibet, where the Brahmaputra River makes a U-turn to flow into Arunachal Pradesh. When he was asked about the dam’s impact on Assam and Arunachal Pradesh during a media interaction in Guwahati on the first day of the New Year, Mr Sarma said, “This matter is already within our notice.
