Windows 11 Media Update Bug Stops Security Updates

Windows 11 Media Update Bug Stops Security Updates

Admins, take caution if you use physical media to install Windows security updates, Microsoft warned on Dec. 24. Installing the October or November 2024 updates for Windows 11, version 24H2 using a CD or a USB flash drive could prevent the operating system from accepting future security updates. How to prevent Windows 11 version 24H2 from locking up security updates The problem with the October or November 2024 update for Windows 11, version 24H2 only occurs “when the media is created to include” the version released between Oct. 8 and Nov. 12, Microsoft said. Updates delivered over the air through Microsoft Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog website are not affected. To circumvent the problem, Microsoft recommends skipping the October or November updates if you install new versions using physical media. Installing the December 2024 version — Windows 11, version 24H2 from Dec. 10 or later — will prevent the issue from occurring. Microsoft said they are “working on a resolution and will provide more information when it is available.” SEE: Windows PowerToys updates bring …

Apple Intelligence bug bounty invites researchers to test its privacy claims

Apple Intelligence bug bounty invites researchers to test its privacy claims

Apple is inviting investigations into the Private Cloud Compute (PCC) system that powers more computationally intensive Apple Intelligence requests. The company is also expanding its bug bounty program to offer payouts of up to $1,000,000 for people who discover PCC vulnerabilities. The company has boasted about how many AI features (branded as Apple Intelligence) will run on-device without leaving your Mac, iPhone, or other Apple hardware. Still, for more difficult requests, it will send them to PCC servers that are built using Apple Silicon and a new operating system. Many AI applications from other companies also rely on servers to complete more difficult requests. Still, users don’t have much line of sight into how secure those server-based operations are. Apple, of course, has made a big deal over the years about how much it cares about user privacy, so poorly designed cloud servers for AI could poke a hole in that image. To prevent that, Apple said it designed the PCC so that the company’s security and privacy guarantees are enforceable and that security researchers …

How E.coli can lead to urinary tract infection: This bug can act fast even in small amounts | Health and Wellness News

How E.coli can lead to urinary tract infection: This bug can act fast even in small amounts | Health and Wellness News

For some time now, the US has been battling the E.coli outbreak through contaminated food. This is a common bacteria in our surroundings and they mostly cause infection in the gastro-intestinal and urinary tracts. What many probably don’t know is that only a few strains of the bacteria cause disease. Most strains don’t. In fact, the harmless ones sit in our gut and are a part of the microbiome, helping in digestion. Of the disease-causing ones, those that produce Shiga toxin can cause severe illness, sometimes even damaging the kidneys. Unlike other disease-causing bacteria, E. coli can cause an infection even if you ingest only small amounts. So even taking a bite of undercooked or contaminated food or swallowing a mouthful of contaminated pool water can cause an infection. WHAT ARE INFECTIONS CAUSED BY E.COLI? Some cause watery diarrhoea, stomach pain and other digestive symptoms. The toxin is so powerful that it can damage the lining of the small intestine, leading to bloody diarrhoea. At times, these bacteria could also travel from the gut to …

‘Israel PM Netanyahu bugged my bathroom with listening devices’, claims Ex-UK PM Boris Johnson | World News

Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has claimed that his security team found a listening device from his personal bathroom after it was used by Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu during their meeting in 2017, The Telegraph reported citing an excerpt of the Conservative politician’s new book. Johnson’s new book titled ‘Unleashed’, which is slated for its release on October 10, mentioned the episode wherein the alleged incident took place in British Foreign Office when Johnson was serving as UK’s foreign secretary. Johnson has alleged in his memoir that during his meeting with Netanyahu, the latter whom he refers to as Bibi, excused to go to the bathroom which Johnson described as similar to “the gents in a posh London club” which exist within a “secret annexe”. In the book, Johnson writes, “Thither Bibi repaired for a while, and it may or may not be a coincidence but I am told that later, when they were doing a regular sweep for bugs, they found a listening device in the thunderbox.” Post the excerpt was published in …

A PS5 update that screwed up game backgrounds was just a bug

An apparent bug was causing game art backgrounds to be replaced by promotional messages and news posts on the PlayStation 5 dashboard for some people on Monday. The images they saw featured promotions for long-expired discounts and ads for new games. People lamented the change in forums and on social media, saying the game art that previously showed up when they highlighted a game was gone. Instead, the image that would ordinarily show up as a news post in a separate section of the PS5 UI was splashed across the screen behind games like Miles Morales, Hi-Fi Rush, and Final Fantasy VII Remake. In a since-deleted post, Daniel Hiatt, product lead for Game Hub and Activity Suggestions with PlayStation, wrote Monday afternoon that the change was a “(new) bug with an existing feature.” Then, by 6PM ET, those game pages are back to normal, as we confirmed on our own PS5s. The @AskPlayStation account on X confirmed the fix, saying: A tech error with the Official News feature on the PS5 console has since been …

Arc Browser adds security bulletins and bug bounties

Arc creator The Browser Company has officially started a bug bounty program to keep its growing Chromium-based browser’s security in check. The company is also launching a new security bulletin to maintain “transparent and proactive communication” with users and researchers on bug fixes and reports. These security revisions followed a devastating bug a researcher found and reported to the company that would’ve allowed bad actors could insert arbitrary code into anyone’s browser just by knowing their easily findable user ID. The problem lived inside the Arc Boosts feature that lets you customize any website with CSS and Javascript. On top of its initial mitigations, the company says it now has disabled Boosts with Javascript by default and added a new global toggle to turn Boosts off completely in Arc version 1.61.2. The researcher, known as xyz3va, was initially paid a $2,000 bounty for the information. Now, with the new program in place, The Browser Company is upping it to $20,000 retroactively. The vulnerability was patched on August 26th. With the new program, security researchers can …

Researchers say a bug let them add fake pilots to rosters used for TSA checks

A pair of security researchers say they discovered a vulnerability in login systems for records that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) uses to verify airline crew members at airport security checkpoints. The bug let anyone with a “basic knowledge of SQL injection” add themselves to airline rosters, potentially letting them breeze through security and into the cockpit of a commercial airplane, researcher Ian Carroll wrote in a blog post in August. Carroll and his partner, Sam Curry, apparently discovered the vulnerability while probing the third-party website of a vendor called FlyCASS that provides smaller airlines access to the TSA’s Known Crewmember (KCM) system and Cockpit Access Security System (CASS). They found that when they put a simple apostrophe into the username field, they got a MySQL error. This was a very bad sign, as it seemed the username was directly interpolated into the login SQL query. Sure enough, we had discovered SQL injection and were able to use sqlmap to confirm the issue. Using the username of ‘ or ‘1’=’1 and password of ‘) OR …
