Carlos Queiroz slams expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup: ‘Vulgar and ordinary’ | Football News

Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz has criticised the expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup format, calling it “vulgar and ordinary” and warning that the tournament risks losing the exclusivity that has traditionally made it football’s biggest prize. The former Real Madrid manager questioned whether qualification still carries the same significance when almost a quarter of FIFA’s 211 member associations can reach the finals. “I believe that value comes when things are rare. The number of teams that can qualify for this competition can turn it into something vulgar and ordinary. When so many teams can qualify, is the value still rare? That would seem debatable to me, but it is only my opinion,” Queiroz said after Ghana’s 2-1 defeat to Croatia. The 2026 edition is the first World Cup to feature 48 teams, expanding from the 32-team format that had been in place since France 1998. The enlarged competition has increased the number of matches from 64 to 104 and guarantees more places for every confederation, with FIFA arguing that the move allows greater global representation and …

Miffed Queiroz on Ghana being denied penalty vs England

2 min readJun 24, 2026 03:27 PM IST England and Ghana’s may have ended without goals but not without events. England superstar Jude Bellingham could be seen having words with the Ghanaian coaching staff at the half-time whistle. Later in the match, there was a challenge made by England defender Ezri Konsa on Prince Adu that led to loud appeals for penalty from the Ghanaians that fell on deaf ears. Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz said after the game that they were happy with the draw but when asked about the appeal for penalty, he didn’t make too much of an effort to mince words before squaring it off with some humour. “I’m not sure VAR is still working in the World Cup. We still have VAR? It’s working?” said Queiroz. “I have some doubts about that because another penalty that they need give to Ghana, a clear penalty against England (was missed).” American official Armando Villarreal was VAR for Tuesday’s match in Foxborough, where Said Martinez of Honduras was referee. “We had our chances …

FIFA World Cup recap: Misery for Ronaldo, Harry Kane gets lucky break | Football News

In England’s first game of the FIFA World Cup 2026 (against Croatia), captain Harry Kane joined the league of elite forwards currently operating at the World Cup to score two goals or more in their team’s opener. It’s an elite group that includes Argentina’s Lionel Messi (hat-trick against Algeria), Norway’s Erling Haaland (two goals against Iraq), France’s Kylian Mbappe (two goals against Senegal) and Germany’s Kai Havertz (two goals against Curacao). Who is yet to join this group is Cristiano Ronaldo, who had a wretched game against Congo, going goalless after having just two shots in the whole game. Congo ended up holding Ronaldo’s Portugal to a 1-1 draw with Joao Neves’s 6th minute goal getting cancelled out by Yoane Wisse’s strike in the first half. Ronaldo’s two shots came in the 68th minute and the 73rd minute, both off target. After the game, Portugal coach Roberto Martínez was repeatedly asked if he considered taking out Ronaldo on Wednesday. “It makes no sense to get the best world scorer to be out when you need …
