The mela has been organised by Raita Kudla Pratisthana, Siri Totagarike Sangha and Savayava Krushika Grahaka Balaga of Mangaluru. Kerala government sets record price of ₹150 a kg for raw cashew nut

Kerala government sets record price of ₹150 a kg for raw cashew nut

In a decision aimed at revitalising the cashew sector, the State government has fixed the price of domestic raw cashew nuts (RCN) at an all-time high of ₹150 per kg. This record-breaking rate was determined during a high-level meeting of the State-appointed price fixing committee, marking the highest value ever assigned to cashew by the government. The move is expected to provide immediate relief to cashew farmers while ensuring that cashew factories have a steady and reliable supply of raw materials without the interference of market volatility. To ensure that this fair price reaches every grower, the committee has issued a strict mandate requiring all buyers to pay the full ₹150 per kilogram. The government has also established a robust procurement network to facilitate this, primarily through the Kerala State Cashew Development Corporation (KSCDC) and Kerala State Cashew Workers Apex Industrial Co-operative Society (CAPEX). These public sector organisations will accept produce directly from farmers at their various factory locations. Market stability Additionally, the Cashew Board will manage larger volumes through a specialised tender process to maintain market …

A Malvani Cashew Curry that is a Summer Favourite

Joanna Lobo finds that in Sindhudurg, chef Dilip Bavkar of Coco Shambhala, makes an aromatic cashew apple curry that is unique to the Malvan region. On a sunny and humid afternoon in Sindhudurg, chef Dilip Bavkar dons his apron and hat as he prepares for a cooking demonstration. His audience is sneaking bits of raw mango and cashew apple that is part of his mise en place. He is demonstrating an utterly delicious recipe, but one I have never tasted before, featuring the region’s most popular summer fruit in a curry — cashew apple. Sindhudurg is a region abundant with cashew and mango orchards, much like Goa. But, unlike Goa, the cashew apple isn’t used much, often discarded or used as manure. But at Coco Shambhala near Bhogwe Beach, the chefs use the cashew apple in a typical Malvani curry. The star of this curry is the Malvani masala, an aromatic spice mix unique to the region.  Bavkar combines this spice mix with coconut to make a bright orange base masala, that he then cooks …

SRINATH The Tamil Nadu Cashew Processors and Exporters Association (TNCPEA) has urged the State Government to include cashews as part of the gift hamper the government has proposed to give to ration cardholders in view of Pongal festival. In a letter addressed to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, the secretary of TNCPEA M. Ramakrishnan said cashew processing has traditionally been a major industry in Cuddalore district with the presence of over 3,000 units. Over 1 lakh families were dependent on the industry. ‘In practice since 12-year-old announcement by Karunanidhi’ Taking this into account, former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi announced the inclusion of cashews as part of the Pongal gift hampers distributed to ration cardholders in 2010. This has been continued every year since then. Pointing out that the cashew industry was already hit by the policies of the Union Government including demonetisation and Goods and Services Tax (GST), Mr. Ramakrishnan urged the Chief Minister to include cashew in the proposed Pongal gift hampers. The inclusion of cashews would protect …
