Panneerselvam criticises DMK govt. over ‘incomplete’ monsoon preparedness

Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on Friday (October 18, 2024) accused the DMK government of not preparing enough for the rains that lashed Chennai recently. He also insisted that the government complete the remaining monsoon-related work to handle the situation better in the future. In a statement, the ADMK Workers’ Rights Retrieval Committee coordinator contended that had Tamil Nadu witnessed heavy rains, the alleged non-preparedness of the State government would have been exposed. “In the eleventh hour, the weather system changed course and moved to Andhra Pradesh, and Chennai did not receive rains. It is only the kindness on the part of the God and not DMK’s efficiency,” he contended. Mr. Panneerselvam rejected purported claims that rainwater had not stagnated in many parts of the city. Stalin on Wednesday (October 16, 2024) said the State government has been preparing for three months to tackle the impacts of the monsoon, and that soon, a permanent solution would be found to the problem of water stagnation in the city. The stormwater drain work and other preparations have come in handy, he said. “Ask the people about their feedback,” Mr. Stalin told reporters after inspecting the relief work at Pallikaranai on Wednesday. Ragu The IMD in its forecast at 7 a.m. predicted intense rain in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal for the next three hours due to cyclone Mandous. Intense spells of rain is likely to occur at a few places over Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram districts, the IMD said. It also predicted moderate rain at many places over Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari Light to moderate rain is likely to occur at a few places over Ranipet, Vellore, Tiruppattar, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakkurichi, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Tiruchi, Karur, Erode, Salem, Namakkal, Thiruppur, Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Dindigul, Theni, Madurai, Sivagangai, Virudhunagar and Tenkasi districts.
