Datuk Misbun Sidek: The coach who made Lee Chong Wei is now chasing his fourth World No. 1 — in India | Badminton News

A good 20 years after Malaysian badminton icon Datuk Misbun Sidek produced his third World No. 1 in Lee Chong Wei in 2006, the renowned coach is stationed at Thiruthangal’s Hatsun Badminton Academy. The spry coach, a grandfather now, still lands on the court at 5 a.m. daily, and in his first week at the academy’s courts in Virudhunagar district, was the last man standing after introducing the trainees to a basic fitness module — leaving them breathless and panting, but acutely aware of the tough regimen he brings. “Indians have excellent skills and in the early rounds of top tournaments it’s fine. But can they maintain fitness levels on the seventh day of the tournament when it’ll be the finals? I’m going to push them hard to ensure they can handle the intensity,” he declares. The sport has changed since Misbun trained brothers Rashid Sidek (1997) and Roslin Hashim (2001) to their respective World No. 1 climbs. At Hatsun, he trains India’s reigning national champion Rithvik Sanjeevi Satish Kumar, hoping to level up his …

Cheech and Chong ride once more | Hollywood

NEW YORK — The irony tickles Cheech and Chong: The Palisades fire smoked them out of their homes. Cheech and Chong ride once more “I had to de-smoke my house,” Tommy Chong says, giggling. “Can you imagine that?” Chong and Cheech Marin ‘s houses, both in the Pacific Palisades, didn’t burn down. But as two of the few homes left standing , they’ve been uprooted. But being on the road has always been a more natural state for Marin and Chong. No comic act has ever gotten so much mileage out of driving nowhere in particular. In their new movie, “Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie” , they reflect on their odd journey while cruising through the desert, looking for a place called The Joint. Marin, who grew up in Watts the son of an LD police officer, met Chong, whose father was Chinese and whose mother was Scotch Irish, after fleeing to Canada to avoid the Vietnam War draft. They met through an improv troupe and immediately felt a rare kinship. “He’s the eggroll, I’m …

Dipping into the History of Poh Chong Foods’ Green Sauce

Dipping into the History of Poh Chong Foods’ Green Sauce

“Pou Chong means ‘may your life be a comfortable and safe journey’. The company’s logo, a small, wooden ship with yellow sails, symbolizes this journey,” says Janice. It’s a fitting symbol, considering how early Chinese migrants arrived in India in similar vessels — Lee’s ancestors were among the early migrants who came to Kolkata in the 1930s, fleeing political turmoil in China. Back in the day, Lee would go from shop to shop to sell his sauce, sometimes by the spoonful. The demand for the Chinese green chilli sauce grew gradually as local vendors realised how well it complemented Indian dishes, especially as a base or a spread for Kolkata’s famous kathi rolls. The green chilli sauce is versatile — it can be used as a marinade, stir-fry sauce or even just a dip with pakoras and kebabs. From the outset, the sauce was favoured by Kolkata’s Mughlai establishments, and today, Pou Chong regularly supplies this sauce to roll shops on Park Street. The company now has four retail locations in the city, and recently …

Lee Chong Wei suggests ‘drastic changes’ as Malaysia failed to win title at BATC 2024

Malaysian badminton legend Lee Chong Wei accused senior men’s players of lacking commitment and discipline as they lost 0-3 to China in the final at the Asia Team Championships in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday. Lee, who retired from badminton in 2019, is doubtful about the future of Malaysian badminton after the host’s lacklustre performance in front of home fans in Shah Alam. While the men’s team failed to win its maiden title, the women’s team’s campaign ended in the quarterfinals with a 0-3 defeat to Indonesia. “Right now I feel like giving up on Malaysian badminton,” Lee was quoted as saying by Malaysian daily The Star. “I know the truth hurts, but I think Malaysian badminton will only go downhill from here if nothing is done,” the 41-year-old, who won three Olympic silver medals and as many Worlds medals, added. In the final, China hammered Malaysia 3-0 after Weng Hong Yang defeated Leong Jun Hao, who was playing the first match in the absence of world no. 10 Lee Zii Jia, 21-19, 21-17 in 51 …

India Open Super 750: In the shadow of former great Lee Chong Wei, Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia learns how to deal with the pressure | Badminton News

It is not easy being Lee Zii Jia. The Malaysian shuttler is a headline-maker back home. Everything he says is newsworthy, every match he plays is an event, any loss he suffers is a stick to beat him with while his wins are a source of great joy for his legion of fans. The former world No.2 is coming into the Olympic year after struggling in 2023. He finished strongly enough but there was a phase in the middle of the year, where he had four straight first-round exits. He also missed out on an Asian Games medal at the cost of HS Prannoy making history for India. But the 25-year-old came up with an impressive performance in New Delhi on Thursday against world No.5 Jonatan Christie to enter the quarterfinals at the India Open Super 750. Dominating the Indonesian star for the most part, Lee put together a performance that sent out a reminder of why he remains a top competitor on tour. “Last year I had a tough start, and now I am …
