Syria’s de facto leader Ahmed al-Sharaa met with senior Christian clerics on Tuesday, amid calls on the Islamist chief to guarantee minority rights after seizing power earlier this month. Syria’s de facto leader meets minority Christians “The leader of the new Syrian administration, Ahmed al-Sharaa, meets a delegation from the Christian community in Damascus,” Syria’s General Command said in a statement on Telegram. The statement included pictures of the meeting with Catholic, Orthodox and Anglican clerics. Earlier Tuesday, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot called for an inclusive political transition in Syria that guarantees the rights of the country’s diverse communities. He expressed hope that “Syrians could take back control of their own destiny”. But for this to happen, the country needs “a political transition in Syria that includes all communities in their diversity, that upholds the most basic rights and fundamental freedoms,” Barrot told AFPTV during a visit to Lebanon with Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu. Barrot and Lecornu also met Lebanon’s army chief Joseph Aoun and visited UN peacekeepers patrolling the southern border, where a …

CPI(M) accused of opposing asylum to Christians in Kerala

Union Minister V Muraleedharan on Saturday accused the CPI(M) of “creating hurdles” in the BJP-led union government’s move “to give asylum to persecuted Christians” from neighbouring Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh in the country. While the CPI(M) has objected to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) on the grounds that it discriminates against people in the name of religion as it leaves out Muslims, Muraleedharan claimed that the stand of the Marxist party was “not to include” any particular community, but “against providing asylum to anyone including Christians”. Speaking to reporters here, the union minister of state for external affairs said, “I want to ask the church heads what is their opinion about the Kerala government and the CPI(M) approaching the Supreme Court against the law which grants citizenship to Christian believers who sought asylum in India after suffering persecution in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh.”  This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Easter 2024: Date, history, significance, celebration of the Christian festival

Easter is meant to be a symbol of hope, renewal and a new life for Christians across the world as it is believed by the community to be the dawn of a new beginning, a time of resurrection and a celebration of life that reminds us that hope must never be lost, for as dark as the road may seem, there always lies light at the end of it. It is a day of feasting and celebration during which people attend prayer services, decorate and distribute Easter eggs and play traditional Easter games but unlike Christmas, there is no fixed date for the festival of Easter. And, in America, the radical left is trying to do both,” Trump told hundreds of cheering attendees at the National Religious Broadcasters International Christian Media Convention in Nashville. Himanta Sarma said tomorrow’s event marks the triumph of Indian civilisation Guwahati: The grand consecration ceremony at Ram Temple in Ayodhya marks not just the triumph of Hindus but a triumph of the Indian civilisation, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said, appealing to Muslim and Christian communities to organise special prayers tomorrow. “I appeal to Muslims and Christians to organise special prayers tomorrow so that all of us, from all castes and communities, can stay together in peace. This is not a triumph of Hindus, but a triumph of Indian civilisation. This is not the triumph of a religion. An aggressor broke an Indian place of worship. Babar was an aggressor. He did not attack just Hindus. There is no difference between British colonialists and Babar. Babar was a foreign power,” Mr Sarma said in Assamese during an interaction with the media today. The grand Ram Temple in Ayodhya is coming up at the site where the Babri Masjid stood before its demolition in 1992. The 16th century mosque had been at the …

Tribal Christians from Bastar villages refuse to return home following recent spate of attacks

The indoor stadium in Narayanpur, Chhattisgarh, where some of the victims are still camping. | Photo Credit: Special arrangement The reluctance of the families of Reshma Korram (33) and Rupji Salam (29) to return home offers a glimpse of an edgy recent past and an uncertain future.  Among the many tribal Christian families who fled from over a dozen villages in Narayanpur after they were attacked by assailants between December 16 and 18, Ms. Korram and Mr. Salam have been camping at an indoor stadium in the district headquarters when they spoke to The Hindu over the phone late last week. The assurances provided by the administration had little impact.  The attacks on Christians, allege affected families, were coordinated and the handiwork of fellow tribal villagers at the behest of right wing groups. They describe it as the latest chapter in the rise of violent incidents over the politically sensitive subject of religious conversions in Narayanpur, 350 km south of capital Raipur, and other districts of the Bastar region.  “We were attacked because of our …

J. Ranganath Misra Commission report to allow Dalit Christians avail SC quota benefits written “within four corners of a room”, Centre to apex court

The Centre in the Supreme Court on Monday declared that the 2007 report of the Justice Ranganath Misra Commission for Religious and Linguistic Minorities, which recommended that Dalits who converted to Islam and Christianity to escape caste oppression in the Hindu religion should be permitted to avail of Scheduled Caste (SC) reservation benefits in government jobs and educational institutions, was “flawed” and composed within the “four walls of a room”. “It was written within the four walls of a room. There was no field study done… The Commission (Misra) took a myopic view of the social milieu in India. The findings of the Ranganath Misra Commission have not been accepted by the government,” Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, for the government, submitted before a three-judge Bench led by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul. Mr. Mehta said a new Commission chaired by former Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan was constituted recently under the Commission of Inquiry Act, 1952 to re-examine the question whether SC status ought to be granted to “new persons” who had converted to religions …
