Christians in Kerala celebrate Easter with prayers, festivities

The Christian community in the State on Sunday celebrated Easter, marking the resurrection of Jesus Christ, with solemn prayers, festivities and traditional feasts after the 40-day Lenten observance. Devotees, including women and children, thronged churches to attend midnight and dawn masses held across the State. Special prayers and services were conducted in churches of various denominations, with bishops and senior clergy leading the liturgy and delivering messages of hope, renewal, and spiritual awakening. In the state capital, Archbishop Thomas J Netto led the midnight mass at St Joseph’s Metropolitan Cathedral in Palayam, while Cardinal Baselios Cleemis Catholicos, head of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, presided over the service at St Mary’s Cathedral in Pattom. In his address, Cardinal Cleemis urged the faithful to exercise their democratic right responsibly in the upcoming Assembly election, emphasising the importance of voting according to one’s conscience. Meanwhile, Mar Raphael Thattil, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church, expressed concern over the continuing conflict in West Asia, calling for peace and solidarity with those affected by violence. Rising attacks on Christians in India are not good for its global image

December 27, 2025 04:15 PM IST First published on: Dec 27, 2025 at 04:14 PM IST On November 23, 2024, Pastor Pranjal Bhuyan of Golaghat Baptist Church was arrested on a false accusation under the Assam Healing (Prevention of Evil) Practices Act. He was the first person to be arrested under this new law. He was released on bail six days after the FIR was lodged. In May this year, the district court dismissed the case. While the world celebrates Christmas, it seems to be a low-key affair in a number of states in our country, where miscreants are attacking Christians in their homes and places of worship. Many cases of false allegations of conversion have led to the arrest of Christians. Currently, 12 states have stringent anti-conversion laws that make it difficult for anyone to wriggle out of the net after being incarcerated. The right to practise, profess, and propagate any religion enshrined in Article 25(1) is set aside by these overpowering legislations. Matters have come to such a pass that even possession of …

Attacks on Christians contradict PM’s message of harmony, visit to church: Gehlot

Former Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot. File Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Thursday (December 25, 2025) expressed concern over the reported attacks and disruptions in prayer gatherings of the Christian community in different parts of the country, saying such incidents were “worrying and condemnable”. In a post on X, Mr. Gehlot said that while the Prime Minister Narendra Modi was visiting a church and giving a message of peace and harmony, news of attacks on members of the Christian community from various regions reflected a serious contradiction. “Symbolic gestures would not be enough, and strict legal action was required against those spreading hatred,” the senior Congress leader said. He added that Indian culture has always upheld the spirit of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”, where every citizen has full freedom to practise their faith. Mr. Gehlot urged the Centre and State governments to uphold the rule of law and ensure that no citizen is forced to celebrate their festival under fear. Reacting to reports suggesting attacks against Christians, he said, “When people of a community are assaulted, every Indian is assaulted.” “Respect for the cultural and religious traditions of all communities is central to Kerala’s politics,” he added. “Sadly, there are attacks on Christians in different parts of the country. Even in Kerala, there was an attack on a carol singing group in Puducherry in Palakkad, which is truly shocking because when our traditions are attacked, it is not only Christians who are attacked, but all of …

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat (File photo) New Delhi: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Saturday said there is no “Ahindu” (non-Hindu) in India, asserting that every citizen, regardless of faith, descends from the same ancestors and shares a common cultural foundation rooted in Hindu civilisation. Speaking at an event titled “100 Years of Sangh Journey: New Horizons”, Bhagwat said the RSS does not seek power or political dominance but aims to organise Hindu society for the glory of Bharat Mata. “When an organised force is raised in the form of the Sangh, it doesn’t want power or prominence. It just wants to serve and organise society for the glory of Bharat Mata,” Bhagwat said, adding that although people once doubted the RSS’s intentions, “now they believe.” The event was also attended by RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale and …

Giving a political colour to Jemimah Rodrigues’ post-match comments robs the country of savouring a famous victory to the fullest

Giving a political colour to Jemimah Rodrigues’ post-match comments robs the country of savouring a famous victory to the fullest

Here is the first line on the acknowledgments page of my novel A Time Outside This Time: “In a 2017 article on behavioural science in The New Yorker, I read that grocers had learned that they could sell double the amount of soup if they placed a sign above their cans reading ‘12 PER PERSON’.”  The sign used by the grocers is a part of a phenomenon that psychologists call “anchoring,” and an aspect of anchoring is what is called “priming”. The associative mechanism in our thinking — let’s say, if someone says, “train travel in India” and I think immediately of Shah Rukh Khan and Malaika Arora dancing atop a moving train — gives us insight into our memories and ideologies. Associative thinking is of interest because it shows us that the behaviour of individuals and groups can be primed by events as well as messaging and propaganda; equally significantly, priming explains how our unconscious biases affect our thinking that we would otherwise consider independent or rational.  In A Time Outside This Time, my …

Trump threatens US military action in Nigeria over treatment of Christians | World News

US President Donald Trump on Saturday said he has asked the Defense Department to prepare for possible “fast” military action in Nigeria if the West African nation fails to crack down on the killing of Christians. The US government will also immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, Trump said in a post on Truth Social. If the United States sends in military forces, it would go in “‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities,” Trump wrote, without providing any evidence of specifics about the treatment of Christians in Nigeria. Story continues below this ad Trump called Nigeria a “disgraced country” and warned its government must move quickly. “If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our CHERISHED Christians!” he wrote. Abuja had no immediate reaction to Trump’s threat of military action. The White House also had no immediate comment on the potential timing of any US military action. His social media post came a day after his administration …

Shiv Sena UBT president Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday alleged that after changing the law on land owned by Waqf board, the BJP is now eying on the lands of Christians, Jains, Buddhists and even temple land. He said that grabbing land of all communities for its industrialist friends is the only agenda of the national party. Uddhav said that BJP will first take lands of the Waqf Board and give them to their friends and after that they will take the next step to grab the land belonging to Christians, Buddhists, Sikhs and Jains. “We have already clarified our stand on the Waqf bill … BJP has nothing to do with Hindus regarding this bill. Their hidden agenda has been exposed by the Organizer (magazine of RSS). BJP will now take the lands belonging to the Christian community and hand it over to its industrialist friends. The next step (after Waqf Amendment Bill) would be to take land of Christians, Jains, Buddhists and Hindu temples. They will give prime land to their friends. BJP’s love …

The government says the law will usher in reforms concerning Muslim religious endowments in the country. Waqf Act: Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday (April 6) alleged that after rolling out the Waqf law, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is now eying the land of Christians, Jains, Buddhists and even Hindu temples for their “friends”. NCP (SP) leader Jitendra Awhad also made a similar accusation, citing an article in the Organiser, the mouthpiece of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Thackeray advised his former ally BJP, which is celebrating its 45th Foundation Day on Sunday, to “behave” in a way Lord Ram did. “The next step (after Waqf law) would be to eye the land of Christians, Jains, Buddhists and even Hindu temples. They will give prime land to their friends. They have no love for any community,” he said. President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday (April 5) gave her assent to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, …
