Quality of legal system crucial in making India USD 10-trillion economy, says CJI | Legal News

3 min readNew DelhiApr 12, 2026 03:40 AM IST Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant on Saturday said the quality of the legal system will be a crucial factor in India’s goal of becoming a USD 10-trillion economy. Speaking on the topic ‘Legal Reform Roadmap to a $10 Trillion Bharat’ at the ‘National Rule of Law Convention 2026’ organised by the Bar Association of India in the Capital, CJI Kant said: “A 10-trillion-dollar Bharat will not be built by capital or policy alone. It will be built, in no small part, by the quality of the legal system that upholds the rule of law and the promises on which all of that depends.” “The legal foundations supporting India’s growth over the last three decades were shaped for a relatively simpler economic moment” but “the liberalisation of the 1990s triggered growth, expanded the middle class, and created a sense of economic confidence that the country had not experienced since Independence,” the CJI said. “We must, however, be mindful that the legal functions that sustained that phase, such …

When the Chief Justice steps away

When the Chief Justice steps away

On March 20, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant stepped away from hearing a batch of petitions challenging the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023. The legislation replaced the Chief Justice of India with a Union Minister, on the selection panel for appointing the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners, superseding the Supreme Court’s 2023 interim arrangement. “I will be accused of conflict of interest,” the CJI remarked before directing that the case be listed on April 7 before a bench comprising judges not in the line of succession to the office of the Chief Justice. While the order directs the Registry to list the case before a Bench to be earmarked separately by the Chief Justice of India, his oral remarks while hearing the case, Dr. Jaya Thakur v. Union of India (2024), raises questions that will linger long after the Bench is constituted. CJI Surya Kant is the second CJI to recuse from hearing the case. Earlier, CJI Sanjiv Khanna recused …

The matter was ordered to be listed for hearing in March 17 last year. Solicitor general Tushar Mehta, who appeared for the Union government, on Monday said that the matter required an elaborate hearing as the home ministry had submitted its response to the PIL pending since 2024. ‘If pipeline is narrow at source, Bench cannot later be broad’: CJI calls on HC collegiums to take steps for women representation | Legal News

4 min readNew DelhiMar 9, 2026 01:38 AM IST Greater representation of women in the judiciary is not about preference but about ensuring equal opportunity and a fair starting line in the legal profession, Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant, said on Sunday. Speaking at the national conference “Bridging the Bench Gap: Women and Judicial Leadership”, Justice Kant said, “When half of India’s population looks to institutions entrusted with safeguarding constitutional rights and finds only limited reflection of its own experience, the concern transcends statistics.” Justice system must inspire confidence among “approximately 650 million Indian mothers, sisters and daughters”, he added. The conference was organised by Indian Women in Law (iWiL) at the Supreme Court’s Additional Building Complex auditorium in New Delhi. Justice Kant said the Constitution, the oath and the office remain the same for every judge. “What changes are the new experiences that inform judicial perspective. Women often bring distinct insights shaped by how law operates in homes, workplaces and everyday realities,” he said. Justice Kant also called on High Court collegiums …
