Speaking at the national conference “Bridging the Bench Gap: Women and Judicial Leadership”, Justice Kant said, “When half of India’s population looks to institutions entrusted with safeguarding constitutional rights and finds only limited reflection of its own experience, the concern transcends statistics.” Justice system must inspire confidence among “approximately 650 million Indian mothers, sisters and daughters”, he added. The conference was organised by Indian Women in Law (iWiL) at the Supreme Court’s Additional Building Complex auditorium in New Delhi. Justice Kant said the Constitution, the oath and the office remain the same for every judge. “What changes are the new experiences that inform judicial perspective. 2 min readNew DelhiFeb 18, 2026 05:14 AM IST The Supreme Court has asked the Director of National Judicial Academy, Bhopal, Justice Aniruddha Bose, to constitute a “committee of experts” to prepare a comprehensive report on developing “guidelines to inculcate sensitivity and compassion into judges and judicial processes in the context of sexual offences and other vulnerable cases”. A bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and N V Anjaria said the committee “shall consider the previous measures undertaken, whether on the judicial side or the administrative side, to achieve such goals, as well as the varying results seen on the ground through the implementation of such measures”. The Supreme Court said Wednesday that the power of the Election Commission of India (ECI) to carry out a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls though “unique” is “not unlimited”, and that the exercise of the power must be “in conformity with principles of natural justice” and “transparent”. Hearing petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the SIR exercise being carried out across the country, the bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi made these remarks after Senior Advocate Rakesh Dwivedi, appearing for the ECI, underlined its power to carry out revision of electoral rolls. Dwivedi referred to Section 21 of The Representation of the People Act, 1950, dealing with the preparation and revision of electoral rolls. He said clause 3 states that the ECI “may at any time, for reasons to be recorded, direct a special revision of the electoral roll for any constituency or part of a constituency in such manner as it may think fit”. Supreme Court Announces Major Listing Reforms

The Supreme Court on Saturday introduced major changes including oral mentioning and urgent listing of matters and issued circulars, days after Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant assured that he was planning to put in place changes. According to the circulars— four circulars have been issued to this effect—the changes, which will come into effect from December 1, will streamline listing of cases for hearing, including automatic listing of fresh cases and hearing on cases involving individual liberty in two days. CJI Surya Kant had earlier this week said the changes which will help do away with the mentioning, whereby parties seeking urgent hearing bring it to the attention of the bench soon after filing. As per the new circulars, there will be “no necessity for litigants to mention their cases before the Court for listing as the fresh cases will be listed automatically”.
