Red Road closure, govt staff ‘mandatory’ attendance for PM Modi’s Yoga Day event trigger row in Bengal

The West Bengal government’s order to close Red Road until June 21 for the International Yoga Day celebrations, in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in Kolkata, has triggered a fresh row in the state. PM Narendra Modi is set to lead the Yoda Day event in Kolkata on June 21. (ANI) In another development, the State Coordination Committee of the West Bengal Government Employees challenged the West Bengal chief secretary’s order asking all state government officers and employees to participate in the International Yoga Day programme on June 21. Meanwhile, the AILU challenged the prolonged closure of the iconic Red Road since June 14, contending that it was causing inconvenience to lawyers belonging to the petitioner organisation who travel to and from the high court. While the court directed the police to ensure that suitable alternative routes remain available for members of the petitioner organisation as well as the general public to reach their workplaces and destinations while Red Road remains closed, it told the government employees’ representative that the directive nowhere states …

One of OpenAI’s internal models recently made a breakthrough by tackling the 80-year-old planar unit distance problem, first posed by Hungarian mathematician Paul Erdős in 1946. The mathematician was known for creating such challenges, collectively known as “Erdős problems”. While artificial intelligence (AI) models have been good at solving math problems, this particular result stands out. Experts say had a human carried it out, it would merit publication in a top math journal. “No previous AI-generated proof has come close” to meeting such high standards, wrote Tim Gowers, a mathematician at the University of Cambridge, in a commentary for OpenAI. How Delhi Gymkhana closure will impact India’s global image, writes ex-IPS Azad | Opinion

Delhi’s iconic Delhi Gymkhana Club is heading towards one of the most dramatic institutional disruptions in recent memory. The writing, many would say, had long been on the wall. Delhi Gymkhana Club in New Delhi has been served a notice to vacate by June 5. (HT Photo) The club has been entangled in legal and administrative disputes, from proceedings before the National Company Law Tribunal to court interventions and controversies surrounding its management and elections. But the closure order touches upon the State’s relationship with legacy institutions, urban heritage, quality of life, and even India’s global image. Politically, this may appear to be a safe and easy target. No political party is likely to lose votes over the fate of Gymkhana. The Left will not rise in protest, nor will the Right. The “jholawallah” activists will celebrate it as a symbolic blow against privilege. Thousands who could not get membership may privately gloat over an exclusive club finally been brought to heel. The optics are very tempting, of a powerful government cracking down on an …

Speed up work of automatic closure systems at 1,228 crossings: Railway Board

The Railway Board has instructed all railway zones to speed up the installation of automatic closure systems at 1,228 level crossings across the country. The move aims to ensure that trains cannot receive a green signal unless the crossing gates are properly closed to road traffic, reported the PTI. The system, known as interlocking of level crossing (LC) gates, is designed to improve safety. Under the new mechanism, the gates will automatically close when a train approaches and if the gate remains open, the system will prevent the train from getting a green signal. This will reduces the risk of accidents caused by human error or negligence, officials said, according to the PTI. Action following fatal accident The directive follows a tragic accident on July 8, 2025, in Cuddalore, where a passenger train collided with a school van, resulting in the deaths of three children. After the incident, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw ordered the installation of interlocking systems at high-risk crossings, the news agency reported. Panic buying leads to closure of petrol pumps in several parts of Telangana| India News

Several petrol pumps in Hyderabad and many parts of Telangana shut their operations on Wednesday due to depletion of stocks in the wake of panic buying of fuel by consumers in the last two days, people familiar with the matter said. No stock board at a petrol pump in Hyderabad. (HT) Long queues of vehicles were witnessed at several petrol pumps, while “no-stock” boards were put up at many other bunks due to non-arrival of stocks on time.
