Daily Briefing | Malviya Nagar fire tragedy: Safety lapses, foreign victims and a search for closure | Live News

One of OpenAI’s internal models recently made a breakthrough by tackling the 80-year-old planar unit distance problem, first posed by Hungarian mathematician Paul Erdős in 1946. The mathematician was known for creating such challenges, collectively known as “Erdős problems”. While artificial intelligence (AI) models have been good at solving math problems, this particular result stands out. Experts say had a human carried it out, it would merit publication in a top math journal. “No previous AI-generated proof has come close” to meeting such high standards, wrote Tim Gowers, a mathematician at the University of Cambridge, in a commentary for OpenAI. With that, let’s move on to the top stories from today’s edition: 21 killed in South Delhi fire Shashi Tharoor on CJP Samba Boys’ magic under Azteca sun 🚨 Big Story The fire that broke out at a bed and breakfast (B&B) restaurant in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar early Wednesday, claiming 21 lives, has proven to be a nightmare for many. How Delhi Gymkhana closure will impact India’s global image, writes ex-IPS Azad | Opinion

Delhi’s iconic Delhi Gymkhana Club is heading towards one of the most dramatic institutional disruptions in recent memory. The writing, many would say, had long been on the wall. Delhi Gymkhana Club in New Delhi has been served a notice to vacate by June 5. (HT Photo) The club has been entangled in legal and administrative disputes, from proceedings before the National Company Law Tribunal to court interventions and controversies surrounding its management and elections. But the closure order touches upon the State’s relationship with legacy institutions, urban heritage, quality of life, and even India’s global image. Politically, this may appear to be a safe and easy target. No political party is likely to lose votes over the fate of Gymkhana. The Left will not rise in protest, nor will the Right. The “jholawallah” activists will celebrate it as a symbolic blow against privilege. Thousands who could not get membership may privately gloat over an exclusive club finally been brought to heel. The optics are very tempting, of a powerful government cracking down on an …

Speed up work of automatic closure systems at 1,228 crossings: Railway Board

Speed up work of automatic closure systems at 1,228 crossings: Railway Board

The Railway Board has instructed all railway zones to speed up the installation of automatic closure systems at 1,228 level crossings across the country. The move aims to ensure that trains cannot receive a green signal unless the crossing gates are properly closed to road traffic, reported the PTI. The system, known as interlocking of level crossing (LC) gates, is designed to improve safety. Under the new mechanism, the gates will automatically close when a train approaches and if the gate remains open, the system will prevent the train from getting a green signal. This will reduces the risk of accidents caused by human error or negligence, officials said, according to the PTI. Action following fatal accident The directive follows a tragic accident on July 8, 2025, in Cuddalore, where a passenger train collided with a school van, resulting in the deaths of three children. After the incident, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw ordered the installation of interlocking systems at high-risk crossings, the news agency reported. Railway officials use a measure called Train Vehicle Unit (TVU) to assess …

Panic buying leads to closure of petrol pumps in several parts of Telangana| India News

Panic buying leads to closure of petrol pumps in several parts of Telangana| India News

Several petrol pumps in Hyderabad and many parts of Telangana shut their operations on Wednesday due to depletion of stocks in the wake of panic buying of fuel by consumers in the last two days, people familiar with the matter said. No stock board at a petrol pump in Hyderabad. (HT) Long queues of vehicles were witnessed at several petrol pumps, while “no-stock” boards were put up at many other bunks due to non-arrival of stocks on time. The disruption led to a surge in demand at operational fuel stations, with stock at some pumps getting exhausted within a single day. In areas such as SR Nagar and Ameerpet, hundreds of auto rickshaws were seen lined up at fuel stations throughout the day. The situation also affected public transport availability, leaving passengers stranded as fewer autos were available on the roads. The rush at the petrol pumps began on Tuesday evening and continued until late into the night, with cars, buses heading to distant destinations and two-wheelers adding to the congestion. At many places, people …

Why 35% of Ludhiana’s Factories Face Closure After Massive Diesel Price Hike

3 min readLudhianaMar 22, 2026 08:25 AM IST After facing the LPG crisis, industries in Punjab are now grappling with yet another serious concern, the continuously rising prices of furnace oil, petcoke and light diesel oil, key fuel sources for furnaces in automobile, steel rolling, fasteners and several allied units, with petroleum companies on Friday increasing the prices of industrial diesel by Rs 22 per litre. Notably, industrial diesel is a regular diesel purchased by large-scale industries and even by public sector companies in bulk for running generators and in-house operations. “The war in West Asia led to this crisis in India, and we are bearing its brunt,” said Pankaj Sharma, president of the Association of Trade & Industrial Undertakings (ATIU). “There has been an abrupt and continuous increase in the prices of petroleum products such as light diesel oil (LDO), furnace oil and petcoke. The prices shot up by nearly 25 per cent in 20 days. The sharp escalation has severely impacted industrial operations, particularly in the forging sector.” Capt Rajesh Mittal of Chamunda …
