Volkswagen weighs 100,000 job cuts and four factory closures in biggest labor battle in history

Volkswagen weighs 100,000 job cuts and four factory closures in biggest labor battle in history

Volkswagen is considering cutting up to 100,000 jobs and shutting four factories in Germany, a restructuring that would become the largest workforce reduction in automotive industry history if approved, Reuters reported, citing the people familiar with the matter. Members of VW’s supervisory board have been informed of the plans, which are due to be discussed at a board meeting on July 9, the report added. The restructuring highlights the mounting pressure on Europe’s biggest carmaker from Chinese electric vehicle makers, weakening demand in Europe and US tariffs. The outcome could reshape Germany’s manufacturing sector and the global auto industry. Up to 100,000 jobs at risk Closing plants at Hanover, Zwickau, Emden and Audi’s Neckarsulm site would put more than 45,000 jobs at risk, on top of the 50,000 cuts already planned, bringing the total to as many as 100,000 positions. In absolute terms, the move would surpass even General Motors’ sweeping restructuring during its 2009 bankruptcy, and the early 1990s when GM cut up to 74,000 jobs over four years and shut or idled 21 …

Restaurants face LPG supply crisis, NRAI warns of ‘catastrophic closures’| India News

Restaurants across various parts of the country have reported shortage in the supply of commercial cooking gas, with the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) on Monday urging the Centre to intervene, saying any disruption to LPG cylinder supply will lead to a “catastrophic closure” of restaurants. The association pointed out that a March 5 order issued by the Centre directing public sector oil marketing companies to ensure LPG is supplied to domestic consumers, has impacted the deliveries of commercial gas cylinders to restaurants. (Praful Gangurde/Hindustan Times) The development comes amid rising energy costs and supply constraints caused by the ongoing conflict in West Asia. “The restaurant industry is predominantly dependent on commercial LPG for its operations. Any disruption therein will lead to a catastrophic closure of majority of restaurants,” NRAI, which represents around half a million restaurants across the country, said in a letter to the Union petroleum and natural gas ministry. Road closures pose challenge for film lovers at Pune International Film Festival | Pune News

Written by Vaishnavi Gujar “I came from Chennai especially to attend the Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) and watch the films of my choice. However, due to road closures for the Bajaj Pune Grand Tour, commuting has become difficult, and I am unable to travel comfortably between venues,” said a movie enthusiast Sudhakar. For Divyashree Kavatkar, a resident of Karve Nagar, the barricades and road closures meant that she had to walk to the venue. “We were diverted from the side roads and could not take turns as planned, which made reaching the festival quite difficult,” she said. As Pune’s landmark cycling event pedaled from Goodluck Chowk to Deccan Bus Stop on January 19, and roads in Shivajinagar and Deccan were closed and traffic diverted, PIFF felt some unwanted side effects. An organiser said that there were only 60 per cent crowds for the afternoon shows at PVR, The Pavillion, and E-Square, the two key festival venues. Some members of the audience said that they had missed afternoon shows. Others compared notes on how they …

Several schools in Noida received emails containing bomb threats on Friday morning, triggering security alerts and precautionary closures across parts of the city. Police officers have stated that preliminary investigations indicated that the threats were hoaxes; however, vigilance was increased, and legal action is underway. According to the police, shortly after the schools reported the emails, senior officers, along with local police teams, the bomb disposal squad, dog units, and anti-sabotage teams, were deployed. “We conducted thorough checks inside school premises and in surrounding areas, including nearby metro stations, markets, and other crowded locations,” officials reported. “No suspicious object has been found so far. Initial findings indicate the emails were hoax messages, but the matter is being investigated seriously,” a senior officer stated. As a precautionary measure, several schools informed parents that they would remain closed for the day to allow security agencies to complete their sweeps. In advisories sent to parents, schools cited a “security-related alert received across the Delhi–NCR region” and announced the suspension of classes on Friday. Some schools that were already …

Behind closed doors: Odisha school closures fuel dropouts and educational challenges for tribal children

On a bright sunny day on October 25, 2025, 45-year-old Laxman Kalaka, a mason, is busy laying bricks for a community building on the outskirts of Karapadi, a remote village in Odisha’s southern district of Rayagada. Around the same time, his two sons and a daughter, all three under 13, wander aimlessly along the dusty village road — sometimes playing, sometimes disappearing into the nearby forest for fun. Of the three, one — aged 13 — dropped out of Class IV from a residential school run by the ST and SC Development Department after his hostel mates mocked him for bedwetting. The daughter, aged six, refuses to walk the 1.5 km alone to the next village to start school. “Either I send my daughter to a hostel and let her study on her own, or she remains illiterate. I am worried that my youngest son could face a similar fate. Had our village school not been shut down, my kids would have studied while staying with us,” says Mr. Kalaka, out of frustration. The Government …
