Modi in Norway LIVE: PM calls for peaceful resolution of conflicts in West Asia and Ukraine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Oslo on May 18-19 for the third India-Nordic Summit comes as the logic of India’s engagement with Northern Europe has fundamentally changed. When India first met the Nordics — Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Iceland — in Stockholm in 2018, and again in Copenhagen in 2022, the relationship was anchored largely in climate cooperation, innovation, digitalisation and the blue economy. Those priorities remain important, but a transformed geopolitical landscape is giving the partnership strategic depth and economic purpose. The change underway reflects developments beyond bilateral ties. The war in Ukraine has transformed Europe’s security order, while strains within the trans-Atlantic alliance have unsettled long-standing assumptions. Oslo summit must mark India’s northward turn India is not an Arctic nation, but it is undeniably an Arctic stakeholder Disclaimer: We do not own any of the content, ideas, images, or text presented here. Endorsing the Pope’s call made during the Palm Sunday Mass in St. Peter’s Square, the Dalai Lama said “the appeal for laying down arms and renouncing violence deeply resonated him, as it speaks to the very essence of what all major religions teach”. “I wholeheartedly endorse the powerful appeal for peace made by the Holy Father, Pope Leo, during his Palm Sunday Mass,” he said. “Violence finds no true home in any of these teachings,” he said, noting that all major faiths, including Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, and Judaism, share the same message of love, compassion, tolerance, and self-discipline. He stressed that lasting solutions to conflicts “such as those in …

Amid conflicts, NHRC chief pitches for ‘complete overhaul’ of Paris Principles In his remarks during a session ‘NHRCs in Turbulent Times’ held as part of the Raisina Dialogue here, he argued that Paris Principles take care of only a “cosmetic outlook” of the matter, as to how a human rights institution is to be constituted. The Paris Principles are a set of standards for National Human Rights Institutions developed by the United Nations in 1993. These were subsequently endorsed by the UN General Assembly in 1993, and set out the basic guidelines recommended by the UN in the establishment of a national human rights institution. On the current global situation when several conflicts are taking place in the world, the NHRC chief, without naming anyone or any country, lamented that the first prerequisite for upholding …

How India managed tariffs, conflicts, and diplomatic wins

How India managed tariffs, conflicts, and diplomatic wins

With the US tariff shocker, unprecedented geopolitical upheavals both on its eastern and western fronts, and tectonic shifts in its extended neighbourhood of West Asia, 2025 was a year of turbulence for India. It prompted a recalibration of foreign policy in New Delhi to tackle multiple shocks and assert strategic autonomy.  The year draws to a close with India intensifying its bid to consolidate its strategic footprint in West Asia and the Horn of Africa, evident in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s three-nation tour to Jordan, Ethiopia and Oman in December. Strategic outreach to Afghanistan and the reset in ties with Canada are among other diplomatic gains.    At the same time, prospects for an India-US trade pact appeared strong, while New Delhi also pressed ahead with other regional or free trade agreements with the UK (July 2025), the European Free Trade Association or EFTA (came into effect in October 2025), Oman, and concluded talks with New Zealand (both in December 2025). Beyond trade and tariffs, the year saw strain in India-US ties and further dip in …

While speaking about modern warfare, CDS Gen Anil Chauhan said that it was at a cusp of a third revolution in military affairs and termed it as convergence warfare.(File/X/@HQ_IDS_India) While talking about what kind of threats India should be prepared for, Gen Chauhan shied away from naming Pakistan and China but indicated that India has land disputes with both its neighbours, reported news agency PTI. “What kind of threats and challenges should India be prepared for? This should be based on two facts. Both our adversaries — one is a nuclear weapon state and one is a nuclear armed state — hence we should not allow that level of deterrence to be breached,” he was quoted as saying. ‘Obvious Conflicts Of Interest’: India Shreds Pakistan For Heading UN Taliban Sanctions Panel | India News

Last Updated:November 15, 2025, 18:31 IST Indian envoy said that countries with vested interests should not be allowed to chair committees dealing with sanctions or counter-terrorism Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, Parvathaneni Harish. (PTI file photo) India on Friday threw shade at Pakistan’s leadership in key United Nations Security Council (UNSC) committees, calling it an “obvious conflict of interest.” Speaking at a debate on the working methods of the Council, India’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador P. Harish, said that countries with vested interests should not be allowed to chair committees dealing with sanctions or counter-terrorism. “Obvious and outright conflicts of interest can have no place in the Council,” Harish said, in a veiled reference to Pakistan. The Indian envoy did not explicitly name the country or the committees, but the remarks were widely understood to target Pakistan’s role as head of the Taliban sanctions committee and co-chair of the counter-terrorism committee.
