Biren Singh’s “Dangerous Idea” Comment Grazes PA Sangma, Son Conrad Sangma Responds

Guwahati/New Delhi: Former Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh launched a frontal attack on Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today over “interfering in internal matters” of the violence-hit state. In response, Mr Sangma condemned Mr Singh for dragging in the name of PA Sangma and called it “unfortunate”. Mr Singh did not say what triggered his latest attack on the Meghalaya chief minister. However, Mr Sangma’s National People’s Party (NPP) had withdrawn support to the then Biren Singh government in November 2024. The NPP has seven MLAs in the 60-member Manipur assembly, which is currently under suspended animation, or MLAs active but without powers. Two Arrested In Karnataka Food Poisoning Tragedy

New Delhi: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has said that two persons have been arrested in connection with the food poisoning incident in Karnataka, in which two students have died. Sources said the owner of the residential school and the hostel warden have been arrested. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Mr Sangma said the Commissioner and Secretary (Home) Cyril Diengdoh, along with other government officials, are in Karnataka to assist the affected families and coordinate with local authorities. One of the two students from Meghalaya who died has been identified as Khrehlang Khongtani, a student of Class VII. The identity of the second victim is yet to be confirmed.  They were among the 23 students from Meghalaya who were residing in the hostel where the tragedy occurred. Following the food poisoning incident, all affected students were immediately hospitalised by the district administration. Guwahati: The Meghalaya government is looking forward to enhancing the state’s and northeast region’s connectivity with the rest of the country through Bangladesh. This will be made possible with the Hili-Mahendraganj transnational economic corridor. While Hili is a border town in West Bengal, Mahendraganj is a border town in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills region. Both areas share the border with Bangladesh. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said the 100-km route has the potential to shorten travel time and cost by 25-60 per cent from Kolkata to growth centres such as Tura, Baghmara, Dalu, and Dawki. Presently, road alignment analytics prepared by the NHIDCL are shared with Bangladesh for conducting a feasibility study for the project. “If the connection between Hilli in west bengal and Mahendraganj in Meghalaya through Bangladesh happens, places like Meghalaya, Barak Valley and Tripura will be connected with Kolkata in the shortest distance, and 600-700 km will be cut,” Mr Sangma said. “This will become a parallel economic corridor. Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday said that the government is introducing game-based learning for the children in the state. Inaugurating the Model Creative Learning Centre (MCLC) at Dobakkol in Tura, he said, “It is important that a child is introduced to game-based learning which will enable them to develop their perceptual, motor, cognitive and self-regulation skills.” He informed that under the Early Childhood Development (ECD) mission, learning centres for children will be set up across the state. Lauding Mere Mentor and Dobakkol Non Govt L.P. School for collaborating to start the MCLC, the Chief Minister said, “The state government has funded the infrastructure but it will be the collective responsibility of the organisation to ensure that it becomes functional.” An amount of Rs 50 lakh was sanctioned for the project under the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund (CMSDF). Senior Meghalaya ministers, including Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, attended an event celebrating the National Medical Council (NMC) approving intake for 150 MBBS seats for a medical college in the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM), which was in the news earlier this year for being targeted by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The USTM is a top 200 university under the National Institutional Ranking Framework, run by a foundation owned by Mahbubul Hoque, a Bengali-Muslim from Assam, who is also the Chancellor of the institute. Earlier this year, Hoque was at the receiving end of several attacks from Sarma – ranging from accusations that he was responsible for flash floods in Guwahati because construction of the medical college to saying that the architecture of the university’s main gate, which has three domes, is a sign of “jihad”.
