Just Like That: Why deny Hindu civilization existed to counter political Hindutva?

Just Like That: Why deny Hindu civilization existed to counter political Hindutva?

These days, there is a debate on the word ‘Hindu’. In its place, some people prefer Sanatan Dharma—the eternal faith. Both are valid, but I want to, in particular, respond to those who say that there is no such word as ‘Hindu’, and therefore Hinduism itself, and the civilization that was its consequence, is not an ancient but a relatively modern notion. These days, there is a debate on the word ‘Hindu’. To my mind, such a claim is prima facie facile. If a people, with a verifiable philosophical vision, religious practice, social norms, kinship rules, creative expression, political thought, ethnic overlap and geographical location, have been aware from time immemorial of their unified identity and can differentiate themselves from others on this basis, does a name tag alter the fact of their existence? Most of the ancient religions of the world, which have been identified as such today and given labels to describe them, were not, at the time of their origin, self-consciously aware of—or concerned about—by what name they would be known to …

‘With folded hands…’: Congress’s appeal to Assam CM Himanta over Pawan Khera row, then a ‘just begun’ counter

Invoking the Supreme Court’s relief to Congress leader Pawan Khera in a case linked to remarks on Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife, senior Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi on Friday made a pointed appeal to the CM. SC grants bail to Khera; Singhvi says ‘arrest should be last resort’, appeals to Assam CM (File photos) Reacting to the ruling, Singhvi said the order reinforces the principle that arrest must not be used routinely. He stressed that it should be “not the first but the last resort”. ‘With folded hands…’: appeal to Assam CM Noting that the Assam chief minister “may well head to a victory two days later or may not”, pointing to the counting of votes for the assembly elections slates for May 4, Singhvi made an unusual, direct appeal to Sarma, referring to remarks attributed to him that were cited in the judgment. “There is also a larger issue,” Singhvi said, adding, “Let me preface it by saying I am nobody to advise the CM of Assam,” news agency quoted him …

Pakistan’s answer to Dhurandhar? All about film Mera Lyari, which Sindh minister called counter to ‘India’s propaganda’

Lyari is a borough of Karachi that most Indians were unaware of till last year. It was the hugely successful Dhurandhar franchise that brought the Pakistani town to national prominence in India. In the 2000s, Lyari was a hotbed of gang activity, which forms the backdrop for Dhurandhar as it blends fact with fiction. And while the film has been hailed in India, across the border, the reception has been mixed. Many are miffed at how the film has presented Lyari as lawless and chaotic. A new film from Pakistan, called Mera Lyari, aims to ‘correct that wrong’. Ayesha Omar in a still from Mera Lyari. What is Mera Lyari? Written and directed by Abu Aleeha, Mera Lyari is a sports drama that focuses on the female football players from the historic Karachi borough. As govt delimitation fails, DMK’s counter| India News

A day after the BJP-led NDA government’s Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill failed the Parliament test — it sought to hasten the implementation of 33% women’s quota in legislatures — Tamil Nadu’s ruling party DMK proposed a private member’s bill instead, delinking the reservation from any change in the total number and boundaries of constituencies. Opposition stance (PTI) The DMK bill proposed to implement the 33% reservation from the very next election, on the existing 543-seat Lok Sabha, without any seat-increase, delimitation, or census data new or old. The bill, by DMK MP Wilson, is any Opposition party’s most direct legislative response so far to the BJP’s charge that rival parties blocked women’s reservation altogether. But both Houses were adjourned indefinitely on Friday, hence the bill could not be taken up for now. Delimitation question The women’s quota was originally passed with almost all-party support in 2023; the question now was over a “hasty” delimitation being proposed based on the old, 2011 Census data, without addressing larger questions of regional distribution of seats and caste sub-quotas, …

India–US trade deal reaffirms what had started looking hazy: India’s role as US ally & China counter | Explained News

3 min readNew DelhiUpdated: Feb 3, 2026 01:39 AM IST India–US trade deal announced: The steep cut in US tariffs to 18 per cent from 50 per cent under the trade deal has reinforced what was always believed in New Delhi but had begun looking hazy — that the US sees in India an ally and counterweight to China as it seeks to rewrite the norms of the global trade order. Prima facie, an 18 per cent headline tariff places India in a reasonably good position against competitors in terms of accessing the American market, but the fine print of the deal would really hold the key to how favourable it is from New Delhi’s perspective. India’s deal with the European Union (EU), for instance, was well-negotiated and strived to balance the concerns on both sides, but US President Donald Trump’s negotiation strategy is typically extractive. A convergence between the two countries on the reciprocal tariff was achieved over the last week, with a number of ‘sticky issues’ having been addressed. Crucial among those is …

JSP leaders should counter YSRCP propaganda on laddu issue: Pawan Kalyan

Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan | Photo Credit: BY ARRANGEMENT Jana Sena Party president and Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan on Monday asked party leaders to strongly counter what he described as false propaganda unleashed by the YSR Congress Party on the Tirupati laddu adulteration issue. He said the JSP could not afford to remain silent while the YSRCP claimed it had done nothing wrong despite the exposure by the Special Investigation Team. The Deputy Chief Minister asserted that ghee adulteration could not have taken place without the knowledge and involvement of YSRCP leaders and certain officials in the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, and said this should be established with evidence. Addressing a party meeting near Mangalagiri, Mr. Kalyan cautioned JSP leaders against falling into the YSRCP’s trap, but said this did not mean maintaining silence when motives were being attributed to statements made by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. He said the YSRCP should not be allowed to have its way as it was attempting to corner the government by resorting to various …

Government plans rare earth corridors to counter constrained global supply chains| India News

Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday proposed establishing dedicated rare earth corridors in Odisha, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu to counter constrained global supply chains. The move was part of a suite of customs duty exemptions aimed at strengthening India’s critical minerals and clean energy infrastructure. Union Budget 2026-27: Government plans rare earth corridors to counter constrained global supply chains The mineral-rich states will receive support to promote mining, processing, research and manufacturing of rare earths. Simultaneously, the government will exempt customs duties on capital goods required for processing critical minerals and various renewable and nuclear energy materials. “I propose to extend the basic customs duty exemption given to capital goods used for manufacturing lithium-ion cells for batteries, to those used for manufacturing lithium-ion cells for battery energy storage systems too,” Sitharaman said in her budget speech. The announcement builds on the November 2025 cabinet approval of the Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Sintered Rare Earth Permanent Magnets.
