CPI seeks compensation or return of land to farmers in Eluru district

The Communist Party of India (CPI) has urged Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to provide immediate compensation to farmers whose lands were acquired for a proposed industrial project in Eluru district, or to return the lands without further delay. In a letter to the Chief Minister on Friday (December 26, 2025), CPI State secretary G. Eswaraiah said that about 340 acres were taken from farmers at Vatloor village in Pedapadu mandal for setting up VEM Technology, an aircraft components manufacturing unit. Although the project was announced in 2016 and the land was allotted through the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC), the unit never came up and the farmers were not paid compensation. Many of them have continued cultivating the land for nearly a decade amid uncertainty, he said. Mr. Eswaraiah said that after the YSR Congress Party came to power in 2019, the project was stalled. The Communist Party of India  (CPI) State secretary Gujjula Eswaraiah has written to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu urging the government to immediately take up and complete the reconstruction of the Annamayya Project in Rajampet constituency, Annamayya district, which was washed away during the devastating floods of November 19, 2021. Mr. Eswaraiah reminded the Chief Minister that the collapse of the project’s earthen bund had left nearly 24 villages submerged, caused the death of 33 people, destroyed over 500 houses, and resulted in enormous loss of livestock and agricultural resources. In his letter on Friday, he blamed the previous YSRCP government and the rampant illegal sand mafia for the tragedy, claiming that excessive sand deposition and failure to clear sand dunes led to the structural weakening of the project. Mr. Eswaraiah pointed out that irrigation engineers had proposed strengthening the breached portion and replacing the dysfunctional fifth spillway gate, in addition to adding 11 new gates. Engineering authorities had estimated a requirement of ₹801 crore, and the government had issued administrative approval for ₹787.77 crore. …

After days of standoff with its junior ally CPI, the ruling CPI(M) in Kerala finally blinked Wednesday with the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF government deciding to suspend its MoU with the BJP-led Centre for the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) scheme. The Vijayan Cabinet also constituted a seven-member Cabinet sub-committee to review the MoU. The development came after the CPI, the LDF’s second-largest ally, took a firm stand against the proposed rollout of PM SHRI in the state. After the signing of the MoU last Thursday, CPI state secretary Binoy Viswam called it a “violation of the decorum of coalition politics”, saying that “the issue has never been discussed in the Cabinet, and the allies have been kept in the dark”. Kochi, The Enforcement Directorate has named the ruling CPI in Kerala as an accused in a fresh chargesheet filed by it in the Karuvannur Service Cooperative Bank “scam” case, official sources said.
