‘For cheap publicity’: SC junks plea for criminal probe against Justice Varma

The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a petition seeking a court-monitored criminal investigation into allegations of unaccounted cash being discovered at the official residence of former Allahabad high court judge Justice Yashwant Varma, describing the plea as an attempt at “cheap publicity”. A three-member in-house inquiry committee examined the allegations against the former judge. (HT PHOTO) A bench of justices PS Narasimha and Alok Aradhe declined to entertain the petition filed by advocate Ghanshyam Upadhayay, who sought registration of a first information report (FIR) and constitution of a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the alleged recovery of cash from Justice Varma’s official residence in Delhi in March 2025. “All cheap publicity. We are not inclined to entertain this…Dismissed,” observed the bench. The petitioner argued that Justice Varma’s resignation did not wipe out any criminal liability arising out of the allegations. He submitted that an earlier petition seeking similar relief had been dismissed on technical grounds because no formal complaint had been lodged with the investigating agencies before approaching the court. “Now that a complaint has …

The Karnataka High Court on Monday refused to halt a criminal investigation against the daughter of suspended former Karnataka Public Service Commission chairman Shivashankarappa S Sahukar, with the petitioner withdrawing her plea after the court questioned the legitimacy of an income certificate allegedly used to claim reservation benefits in a government recruitment process. HT Image Hearing a petition filed by Suma S Sahukar seeking to quash the first information report against her, Justice M Nagaprasanna said the allegations disclosed a prima facie case warranting investigation and indicated that the court would not invoke its inherent powers to terminate the proceedings at the threshold. During the hearing, the judge repeatedly questioned how the petitioner could claim reservation by declaring an annual income of ₹40,000 when investigators alleged her family’s annual income was about ₹30 lakh. “Prima facie, this appears to be a case of fraud,” Justice Nagaprasanna observed. “You have taken away the opportunity meant for a poor candidate. Is this how reservation benefits are to be claimed?” the court asked. The petitioner’s counsel argued that …

A court in Vadgaon Maval on Saturday rejected the Pune Rural Police’s request for an extension of police custody for the two accused in the murder of 25-year-old realtor Ketan Agarwal. Judicial Magistrate First Class A.M. Vibhute remanded Siya Goyal and her alleged partner, Chetan Chaudhary, to 14 days of judicial custody until July 16 after their police custody ended. The prosecution had requested an additional three days of police custody, saying investigators needed more time to examine digital evidence recovered from the accused’s mobile phones. Police told the court that the pair allegedly used coded language, nicknames and symbols while communicating. Investigators argued that further questioning was needed to decode the conversations and establish the alleged conspiracy. Defence opposed request The defence argued that the police had already been given enough time to investigate the case and had failed to provide a valid reason for extending police custody. After hearing both sides, the court rejected the prosecution’s request and ordered that both accused remain in judicial custody until July 16. Defence may seek bail …
