The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a petition seeking a court-monitored criminal investigation into allegations of unaccounted cash being discovered at the official residence of former Allahabad high court judge Justice Yashwant Varma, describing the plea as an attempt at “cheap publicity”. A three-member in-house inquiry committee examined the allegations against the former judge. A court in Vadgaon Maval on Saturday rejected the Pune Rural Police’s request for an extension of police custody for the two accused in the murder of 25-year-old realtor Ketan Agarwal. The prosecution had requested an additional three days of police custody, saying investigators needed more time to examine digital evidence recovered from the accused’s mobile phones. Police told the court that the pair allegedly used coded language, nicknames and symbols while communicating.
