Congress, RJD slam reduction in subsidised LPG cylinders under Ujjwala scheme

Opposition leaders on Tuesday criticised the Centre`s reported decision to reduce the number of subsidised LPG cylinder refills available under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) from nine per year to four, reported the IANS. Several leaders accused the government of weakening welfare support for low-income households and questioned its economic policies. Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit launched a sharp attack on the government, claiming that the reduction in subsidies reflected a decline in welfare measures. He remarked that the Ujjwala scheme should now be called the “Andhkaar Scheme”, arguing that successive reductions in subsidised refills had diluted the programme`s original purpose. Dikshit said previous governments had provided more extensive support and questioned why the number of subsidised cylinders had been reduced despite claims of economic progress. In a major action against illegal and potentially dangerous LPG gas refilling activities, the Property Crime Cell of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police on Thursday busted an unauthorised gas refilling racket operating in the Chakan market area, seizing 251 LPG cylinders, refilling equipment, and a vehicle collectively worth Rs 9.71 lakh. Caught in act Police said they received information about the illegal action at Chakan Market in Khed taluka. Following the information, a police team raided the premises and caught the accused red-handed. The arrested accused have been identified as Prakash Siddhinna Jalagni, 32, a resident of Chakan and Tushar Prafulla Wasale, 36, a resident of Ektanagar, Chakan. Three LPG cylinders exploded one after another inside a house in Chandigarh’s Burail area on Monday evening, injuring at least four people, police said. The supply of domestic LPG across India remains stable, with the sale of 5 kg cylinders witnessing a sharp rise, particularly among migrant workers. According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, over 1.1 lakh small LPG cylinders were sold on Monday alone, taking the cumulative total to 14.3 lakh since March 23, reported IANS. The increase reflects a significant surge in demand for smaller cylinders, which are widely used by migrant labourers for cooking purposes. Azhar Maqsusi, a city-based activist who distributes food to around 400-500 people daily, said he was unsure if he would have a cylinder on Wednesday morning. Every day, cooking begins at 8.30 a.m. under the Dabeerpura flyover and requires one commercial cylinder. Through the Sani Welfare Foundation, Maqsusi and his team have been distributing food near Gandhi Hospital in Musheerabad, Dabeerpura and Barkatpura for over a decade, including during the COVID-19 pandemic. NDA manifesto promises Rs 2,500 aid for women, free LPG cylinders in Kerala

The BJP-led NDA on Tuesday released its manifesto which promised monetary benefits for needy women and those above 70 years, two free LPG cylinders per year for poor households, an AIIMS for Kerala and protection of places of worship in the state. The manifesto, released by BJP national president Nitin Nabin at an NDA event here, also promised a high speed railway network connecting the state capital with Kannur, 20,000 litres of free water for every household and “water for Tamil Nadu and safety for Kerala” with regard to the Mullaperiyar dam. The manifesto said that every woman from poor and BPL households will be provided with a Bhakshya Arogya Suraksha Card with a monthly recharge of Rs 2,500, which they can use at pharmacies and grocery stores. Following directives issued from the chief secretary, district administrations across the state are actively monitoring the situation. To ensure smooth supply of petrol, diesel and LPG across the state, and curb black marketing, 17,581 raids and inspections have been carried out across the state since March 12, the statement said.
