Amid the escalating LPG crisis, ten persons on Monday were arrested for allegedly selling commercial gas cylinders in Hyderabad at exorbitant rates. The police officials said that a total of 414 cylinders were seized from their possession. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Task Force) Gaikwad Vaibhav Raghunath said in a release that, based on credible information, the Commissioner`s Task Force apprehended 10 persons who were illegally selling the gas cylinders to needy customers at a high rate. Police further said that the prime accused was running a gas agency, and it was found that he had been illegally dumping gas cylinders in Banjara Hills, with the help of labourers, in violation of the prescribed rules and regulations. 414 gas cylinders seized in Hyderabad Further, the accused has been selling these gas cylinders to customers at inflated prices, thereby exploiting the public for wrongful gain, police added. For two free LPG cylinders to every household — one each on the Hindu festivals of Holi and Diwali — the Delhi government has allocated ₹260 crore in its budget, chief minister Rekha Gupta announced on Tuesday as she presented the financial statements and plans for the National Capital Territory (NCT). Three men were arrested in southwest Delhi’s Mahipalpur for allegedly hoarding LPG cylinders to sell them at a premium price, police said on Sunday. They were identified as Krishna, Dinesh Sahu, and Mithilesh, aged 33, 46, and 39, all from Bihar but living in Delhi. The police seized 74 LPG cylinders — 70 domestic and four commercial — along with a transport vehicle and refilling equipment in the raid on Saturday, an officer said.  “The trio was engaged in illegally storing LPG cylinders and supplying them to local customers. They allegedly used metal pipes to transfer gas from multiple filled cylinders into empty ones to manipulate supply and increase margins,” the officer said. Amid the ongoing LPG crisis across the country, the Delhi Police on Wednesday busted multiple illegal LPG storage and refilling units across the city. As reported by news agency PTI, the Delhi police officials seized a total of 269 cylinders and apprehended six persons in separate operations, an official said. In South Delhi`s Rajpur Khurd area, police unearthed an illegal LPG storage unit, arresting two persons and seizing 223 cylinders from the premises. The accused who have been taken into custody are identified as Hitesh Rathi (38) and Arvind Kumar (40). The Centre on Tuesday said it has intensified action against LPG hoarding across the country, conducting over 12,000 raids and seizing more than 15,000 cylinders amid reports of panic buying and rumours of a supply shortage, reported news agency IANS. Officials, however, reiterated that there is no shortage of LPG and urged consumers to avoid unnecessary bookings. 12,000 raids conducted to curb hoarding Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary in the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry, said enforcement teams have been actively carrying out inspections to prevent hoarding and black marketing of LPG cylinders, reported IANS. A 28-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly selling LPG cylinders illegally in southeast Delhi`s Jamia Nagar, police said on Tuesday, reported the PTI. The accused, identified as Shahnawaz, was detained during routine patrolling in the Yamuna Pusta area. Police officials said they found Shahnawaz standing near a tempo loaded with LPG cylinders and selling them to local residents. When questioned, he failed to produce any valid licence or authorisation. A total of 62 cylinders — including 48 filled and 14 empty ones — were recovered. The vehicle used to transport them was also seized, according to the PTI. Illegal sales for profit During preliminary questioning, the accused admitted to selling LPG cylinders without issuing receipts in order to make higher profits. Amid the LPG crisis in country, the Beed Police in Maharashtra along with a team of revenue department raided a house and recovered as many as 29 gas cylinders which were allegedly illegally stored for suspected black marketing, officials said, reported the PTI. According to the police, a joint team of police and the revenue department seized the LPG cylinders during the raid in Beed district, they said. The operation was conducted at around 1:30 am on Saturday in the Shivnerinagar area on Imampur Road following specific information about illegal storage of gas cylinders, according to the PTI. According to officials, the raid was carried out by a team from Pethbeed Police Station along with revenue department officials. During the operation, authorities found 29 LPG cylinders stored illegally, suspected to be intended for black marketing. The total value of the seized cylinders has been estimated at Rs 73,000. Amid the LPG crisis, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has issued a notification, stating that the households that already have a connection for Piped Natural Gas (PNG) will no longer be allowed to retain a domestic Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) connection. The government notification stated that such consumers must immediately surrender their LPG connections and will not be eligible to receive LPG cylinder refills from government oil companies or their authorised distributors. “No person having a piped natural gas (PNG) connection and also having a domestic LPG connection shall retain a domestic LPG connection, or take refills of domestic LPG cylinders from any Government oil company, or through their distributors. Such persons will be required to immediately surrender their domestic LPG connection,” the notification stated. It also clarifies that individuals who already use PNG for domestic cooking will not be allowed to apply for a new LPG connection in the future. But the domestic supply is near-normal. Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy on Saturday (March 14) said that he wrote to the Centre requesting additional commercial LPG cylinders. A sharp drop in the commercial LPG deliveries were recorded, from the usual requirement of 23,000 cylinders per day to roughly 6,200 cylinders. The Minister said that the domestic LPG supplies stand at near-normal levels with around 2.15 lakh cylinders delivered per day. On Friday, a little over 2.37 lakh domestic cylinders were delivered.
