Inside the Deccan Queen’s new Warli-art dining car

Running between Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Pune, the Deccan Queen, fondly known as Dakkhan chi Rani (Queen of the Deccan), is not just a daily commuter favourite but a moving piece of railway history. Introduced on June 1, 1930, by the Great Indian Peninsula (GIP) Railway, a precursor to Indian Railways, the Deccan Queen remains the only running passenger train in India with a dedicated dining car offering table service, setting it apart from an era of packaged, seat-delivered meals. Last month on March 27 the Central Railway unveiled a newly refurbished dining car fitted with improved interiors, modern furniture, and design elements inspired by traditional themes such as Warli art, blending heritage, aesthetics and modern comfort. Gokulam Kerala beat Aizawl FC; Sreenidi Deccan go past Dempo

Gokulam Kerala FC staged a brilliant comeback before scoring an injury time winner to condemn Aizawl to a sixth game without a win in the 2024-25 I-League with a 2-1 victory on Tuesday. The visitors scored two goals in the second half through substitutes Sinisa Stanisavic (49’) and Thabiso Nelson Brown (90+5’) after Aizawl FC took the lead in the first half when Samuel Lalmuanpuia struck from a free-kick in the 17th minute. The result means Aizawl remain mired deep in the relegation zone, three points adrift of their nearest rivals as they have so far collected just 11 matches from 16 outings. Gokulam Kerala, meanwhile, climbed to fourth on the table with 25 points from 16 matches. As has been the norm, Aizawl were the ones quick off the blocks and immediately put Gokulam under pressure with their speedy wing play. In the 17th minute Lalbiakdika was fouled just outside the box, to give Aizawl a first shot at goal. The ball was in a favourable position and yet, Samuel Lalmuanpuia had a lot …

Shillong Lajong thumps hapless Sreenidi Deccan

Shillong Lajong thumps hapless Sreenidi Deccan

Shillong Lajong FC put four unanswered goals past Sreenidi Deccan FC to take three points in their 2024-25 I-League match at the SSA Stadium on Friday. Lajong had come into the game as the most prolific scorers in the league and their performance burgeoned those credentials. Sreenidi’s mini revival, where they had lost once in the last seven matches, came to an end though and they will reflect on the fact that they have now conceded nine goals in two encounters against the Meghalaya side this season. Despite facing a highly partisan crowd, Sreenidi Deccan were the ones who dominated the first half, controlling the possession in midfield even without actually making inroads with the ball in the final third. The hosts for their part were playing mostly on the counter, often using set pieces to trouble Sreenidi’s defence. The first chance fell to Sreenidi in the 5th minute when William Alves cut the ball back towards the penalty spot from the left. A deflection took it to the feet of Lalromawia, whose first time …

Sreenidi Deccan blanks Aizawl FC; Bengaluru holds Churchill to draw

Sreenidi Deccan FC piled on the sorrow for a hapless Aizawl FC, beating them 3-0 at the Deccan Arena on Monday. The win improved Sreenidi’s position on the table by one place as they rose to eighth with 15 points, six clear of the relegation zone. The Deccan Warriors also recorded their first clean sheet of the season. Aizawl, meanwhile, remained in 10th place, level on nine points with fellow strugglers SC Bengaluru and Delhi FC. The battle between two porous defences was always going to be decided by which one went ahead first, and the home side left that aspect in no doubt, surging ahead as early as the fifth minute. From a free-kick on the right wing, the ball was swung into the far post, bypassing the entirety of Aizawl’s ball watching defence. Defender Gurmukh Singh, unmarked, slammed in the volley from five yards away. As calamitous as it was, Aizawl’s day was only going to get worse. Despite doing more with the ball, the visitors were outmatched in midfield and often the …

Namdhari FC draws 1-1 against Sreenidi Deccan after four-match win streak

I-League leaders Namdhari FC’s four-match winning run came to an end as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Sreenidi Deccan FC at the Namdhari Stadium on Tuesday. Both goals came in the first half from two Brazilian strikers, Cledson Carvalho da Silva scored his seventh I-League goal for Namdhari before William Alves equalized at the stroke of half-time for Sreenidi Deccan. Namdhari remains at the top of the table with 21 points from 11 games, but Churchill Brothers can overtake them should they beat Real Kashmir on Thursday. Sreenidi Deccan, who have now drawn three of their last four, continue to stay in eighth place with 12 points. After a cagey start, it took a defensive lapse by Sreenidi Deccan for the hosts to score the opener in the 33rd minute. It should’ve been a routine back pass to the goalkeeper for Eli Sabiá but a bit of hesitation allowed Cledson Carvalho da Silva to muscle past him and slot the ball past Aryan Lamba. And it was Brazilian Cledson’s compatriot, William Alves …

Sreenidi Deccan and Shillong Lajong play out draw; Inter Kashi beat Aizawl FC

The high-scoring battle at the Deccan Arena that lasted nearly a hundred minutes saw the fortunes fluctuating at rapid intervals. Shillong Lajong FC took the lead five times and yet Sreenidi Deccan scored an equaliser on each and every occasion forcing the visitors to split the points. The 10 goals, highest in an I-League game this season, were equally split – five in each half. The first five came in the opening 21 minutes itself, and it remained 3-2 in favour of Lajong for the next 50 minutes. Five more goals arrived between the 71st and the seventh minute of injury time as both sides had to settle for a point. For the visitors, Douglas Tardin netted a second hat-trick in as many games and took the lead in the Golden Boot race with nine goals. The Brazilian picked up from where he left off in the 5-0 win over SC Bengaluru earlier this week. He opened the scoring in the fourth minute after pickpocketing Faysal Shayesteh in the box and slotting into the bottom …

Gokulam Kerala beats Dempo; Real Kashmir play out draw with Sreenidi Deccan

Gokulam Kerala FC continued their renaissance, winning a third game on the trot with a narrow 1-0 victory over Dempo Sports Club in the 2024-25 I League on Tuesday. Gokulam are now unbeaten in five matches and climb to second on the table. Dempo, meanwhile, continue their miserable run of form falling to their fourth loss in as many games. In a high octane first half, it was Dempo who had the first clear chance to race into a lead, as early as the seventh minute of the game. Pruthvesh Pednekar’s cross from the right wing was met perfectly by Shubham Rawat. The forward’s volley bounced off the crossbar, and goalkeeper Shibinraj Kunniyil’s shoulder, to safety. From there, Gokulam seized control of the game. First, Adama Niane, having been played into space by Sergio Llamas, lashed a shot from outside the box only to see it bounce off the post. A few minutes later, it was Ignacio Loyola’s turn, to have a go, and the Spaniard shot from outside the box again, the ball taking …
