‘My job is at risk if I don’t perform’:Sreenidi Deccan coach Carlos Vaz Pinto

Carlos Vaz Pinto’s journey with Sreenidi Deccan commenced in 2021, heralding a new era of promise and ambition for the club. Under his astute guidance, Sreenidi came tantalizingly close to securing promotion to the prestigious Indian Super League last year. “I understand that my job is at risk if I don’t perform, but as a coach, I can’t let that pressure dictate my approach,” Carlos Vaz Pinto starts talking with that trademark smile on his face. Sreenidi is currently second on the I-league points table, eight points behind league leaders Mohammedan SC. Sreenidi has shown trust in Vaz Pinto, unlike many clubs who changes every year if the trophy is not delivered. “Sreenidi’s growth as a club relies on stability, and focusing solely on results won’t facilitate that growth,” Carlos says. “While success is a long-term goal, our primary aim is to continue growing and evolving as a club, both on and off the field,” says Vaz Pinto. Youth development Like every other expert, Carlos also emphasizes the potential India holds in football. “India’s potential …

Gokulam Kerala beat Delhi FC, Aizawal crumble against Sreenidi Deccan

Gokulam Kerala and Sreenidi Deccan registered victories in I-League on Monday. Gokulam Kerala beat Delhi FC Gokulam Kerala FC scripted an extraordinary late comeback to beat Delhi FC 2-1 at the Namdhari Stadium in Sri Bhaini Sahib on Monday, February 19, 2024. After a lacklustre opening half in which Nidhin Krishna’s own goal put Delhi FC ahead, it took the last 10 minutes for the Malabarians to come to life and net twice through captain Álex Sánchez and debutant Lalliansanga Renthlei, thus extending their winning streak to five games. The win sees Gokulam Kerala retake second spot in the table with 29 points, five less than leaders Mohammedan Sporting. Delhi FC, on the other hand, suffered their first loss in five games at the Namdhari Stadium, and remained in eighth place with 19 points. The hosts, in fact, enjoyed a dominant first half, seeing plenty of the ball in the Gokulam Kerala half. Apart from an Álex Sánchez shot which was dragged wide in the third minute, the Malabarians created very little in the first …

Sreenidi Deccan ease past Churchill Brothers, Real Kashmir stun Mohammedans

Sreenidi Deccan beat Churchill Brothers It took a late winner from Eli Sabia for Sreenidi Deccan to beat Churchill Brothers at the Tilak Maidan on February 4, 2023. The late goal kept Sreenidi’s dreams of a first I-League title intact, even as they trail far behind Mohammedan Sporting on the points table. In a fairly tempered start, it was Sreenidi Deccan who controlled most of the tempo, their passing and midfield gile leaving Churchill’s enforcers in the cold. In a series of setpieces early in the game, Sreenidi showed their aerial threat, imposing themselves on a fairly flaccid Churchill defence. The first goal duly, and deservedly, arrived in the 11th minute, David Castaneda heading in from a mere two yards from Rilwan Hassan’s cross from the right. Despite Castaneda taking the applause, it was the latter’s inch-perfect cross that really set up the simple finish. Castaneda had a chance to double his and the team’s tally on the half-hour mark, latching on to another cross from the right flank, from point-blank range. Somehow, Bilal Khan …

Sreenidi Deccan faces turmoil as I-League’s poor planning hinders club competitiveness

Sreenidi Deccan FC has been hit with a major setback just nine days before their crucial match against NEROCA FC on February 10th. The club received unexpected news that the match, originally scheduled to take place in Manipur, will now be held in Shillong. However February 11th marks a Sunday when Shillong airport remains non-operational. This leaves the team with the daunting task of a three-hour bus journey to Guwahati followed by a three-hour flight to Hyderabad, with the team landing at 6 PM on the same day. Compounding the chaos, a mere two days after this ordeal, Sreenidi Deccan FC is set to face TRAU in a home game. This back-to-back schedule puts an immense strain on the players, testing their physical and mental endurance. Looking ahead, the team is slated for another away game against Aizawl just three days after the match against TRAU. The relentless fixture changes, coupled with the lack of adequate planning and support, have raised serious concerns among the players, coaching staff, and fans alike. This abrupt alteration to …

Sreenidi Deccan humble city rivals Hyderabad FC

Sreenidi Deccan’s first half performance was enough to condemn Hyderabad FC to a third successive defeat in the Kalinga Super Cup on January 19, 2024. For Sreenidi, the win means the end the competition on a positive note with points to their name. In a blistering opening passage of play, Sreenidi Deccan put the game beyond Hyderabad FC’s reach and ensured they’d finish the tournament with no points on the board at all. It would be small consolation for Carlos Vaz Pinto, but that opening passage was the best Sreenidi have looked all season, across competitions. The first two goals arrived within minutes of each other. Ibrahim Sissoko headed the first in from Faysal’s Shayesteh’s corner in the fifth minute of the game, rising at the far post to beat his marker. Shayesteh picked up a second assist from a second corner from the other side of the pitch. This time his outswinger was met perfectly by Eli Sabia. If those two goals were due to lacklustre defending, then the third, in the 10th minute …

Rediscovering the role of stepwells in the Deccan

The renovated stepwell at Bansilalpet, also known as Naganna Kunta by some accounts, was restored by The Rainwater Project in collaboration with the Municipal Administration and Urban Development department, in Secunderabad on Friday. | Photo Credit: File Photo The Forgotten Stepwells of Telangana is a timely documentation of the wells that have been part of the cultural and social fabric of the region. The book by Hyderabad Design Forum (HDF) led by Yeshwant Ramamurthy is a fitting tribute to the role of wells before the advent of borewells and piped water supply. Drawing information from religion, mythology and lore, it places the role of stepwells in perspective in the arid dry landscape of Deccan. “From unravelling scriptural building codes, hydrology, geology, construction techniques, iconography, history and folklore, the book aspires to resurrect the hitherto undocumented heritage of subterranean water architecture in Telangana,” says author Yeshwant Ramamurthy in the preface. True to the goal, the book unravels some of the lesser-known aspects of the stepwells and the reason for their existence.  The book has contributions by various authors, most …
