AI Deepfakes Rising as Risk for APAC Organisations

AI deepfakes were not on the risk radar of organisations just a short time ago, but in 2024, they are rising up the ranks. With AI deepfakes’ potential to cause anything from a share price tumble to a loss of brand trust through misinformation, they are likely to feature as a risk for some time. Robert Huber, chief security officer and head of research at cyber security firm Tenable, argued in an interview with TechRepublic that AI deepfakes could be used by a range of malicious actors. While detection tools are still maturing, APAC enterprises can prepare by adding deepfakes to their risk assessments and better protecting their own content. Ultimately, more protection for organisations is likely when international norms converge around AI. Huber called on larger tech platform players to step up with stronger and clearer identification of AI-generated content, rather than leaving this to non-expert individual users. AI deepfakes are a rising risk for society and businesses The risk of AI-generated misinformation and disinformation is emerging as a global risk. In 2024, following …

I started my trip from Hyderabad which was a nice occasion because Microsoft is celebrating 25 years in the country and that has been such a fantastic experience. So I was challenging the team there that we have to make the accuracy better. For now, AI is a co-pilot that helps suggest things but …

AI’s Impact On 2024 Lok Sabha Polls-Are We Prepared?

The 2024 Lok Sabha elections are poised to witness a paradigm shift due to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) on a large scale. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has established itself as a frontrunner in adopting cutting-edge technology compared to other political factions in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, leading the BJP government at the Centre, stands out as one of the most tech-savvy leaders in the nation. In preparation for the forthcoming elections, the BJP has employed AI to translate PM Modi’s speeches into eight different languages, aiming to expand his reach across diverse linguistic communities. These speeches are now accessible in Bengali, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, Marathi, Odia, and Malayalam through various social media platforms. Previously, PM Modi utilised AI to translate his live speech during the Kashi Tamil Sangamam event in Varanasi in December 2023. AI deepfakes are cheap, easy, and coming for the 2024 election

Our new Thursday episodes of Decoder are all about deep dives into big topics in the news, and this week, we’re continuing our miniseries on one of the biggest topics of all: generative AI. Last week, we took a look at the wave of copyright lawsuits that might eventually grind this whole industry to a halt. Those are basically a coin flip — and the outcomes are off in the distance, as those cases wind their way through the legal system. A bigger problem right now is that AI systems are really good at making just believable enough fake images and audio — and with tools like OpenAI’s new Sora, maybe video soon, too. And of course, it’s once again a presidential election year here in the US. So today, Verge policy editor Adi Robertson joins the show to discuss how AI might supercharge misinformation and lies in an election that’s already as contentious as any in our lifetimes — and what might be done about it. The conversation around media manipulation on social platforms …

AI, Elections And Law – India-EU Talks Underline Why Collective Action Is Important

India will be going to the polls in the next couple of weeks and around 17 European countries will see parliamentary or presidential elections in 2024. It’s not being called a mega-election year for nothing-over 50 countries worldwide and half the world’s population is voting in national elections this year.  One of the biggest challenges that has emerged today is Generative Artificial Intelligence(AI)-induced mis- and disinformation. Risk from it has been rated as the most pressing issue in the short term by the World Economic Forum’s Global Risk Report 2024. It surpasses even climate change, war, and economic weakness. On Wednesday, over 35 experts from the European Union (EU) and India are coming together in New Delhi to look at ways to tackle the threat of online disinformation and information manipulation. The Deputy Head of the Delegation of the European Union to India, Seppo Nurmi, has said, “In the physical world, Europe might seem far away from Asia, but in cyberspace, we live together, sometimes in a complex, dangerous cyber-neighbourhood where our societies depend on …

WhatsApp Introduces Helpline in India to Diminish AI-Generated Misinformation, Deepfakes

WhatsApp will soon get an important safety feature that will help users in India avoid misinformation, especially those generated by artificial intelligence (AI), and deepfakes. Meta and the Misinformation Combat Alliance (MCA) announced on Monday that they will soon launch a helpline on WhatsApp where users will be able to report all such instances. The development comes just days after 20 leading tech firms, including Meta, Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, pledged to work together to detect and counter harmful AI content ahead of global elections in 2024. MCA, a cross-industry collaborative organisation focused on eliminating misinformation, partnered with Meta to work on this new safety feature. WhatsApp Helpline will be a chatbot where any user can easily reach out and report a message that is spreading misinformation or is a deepfake. Deepfakes are AI-generated content, mainly in image or video format, that either impersonates another person or manipulates objects and facts to mislead the viewers. Often, such content is made to be hyperrealistic and can instil paranoia and frenzy in large groups. The MCA will …
