File | Photo Credit: The Hindu Intense heat continued to grip several parts of Telangana on Friday (May 22, 2026) with a total of 16 districts recording maximum temperature above 46℃, according to data from the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS). Sirpur in Kumaram Bheem Asifabad was the hottest location in the State recording a maximum temperature of 46.5℃. This was followed by 46.4℃ in Dharmapuri (Jagtial), Gangadhara (Karimnagar), Kasipet (Mancherial), Yergatla (Nizamabad), Kamanpur (Peddapalli), Konaraopeta (Rajanna Sircilla), Mothey (Suryapet), 46.3℃ in Kamalapur (Hanumakonda), Mogullapally (Jayshankar Bhupalpally), Khammam (Khammam), Eturunagaram (Mulugu), Khanapur (Nirmal), 46.2℃ in Thorrur (Mahabubabad), Koheda (Siddipet) and Parvathagiri (Warangal). Chilpur in Jangaon recorded a maximum temperature of 45.8℃ and Indervelly in Adilabad recorded 45.6℃. Uttar Pradesh is set to significantly strengthen its higher education infrastructure with the introduction of 29 new government degree colleges from the upcoming academic session starting July 1, officials said on Tuesday. Of the 29 colleges, 20 are being set up under the Prime Minister Jan Vikas Programme (PMJVK). (FOR REPRESENTATION) The initiative is aimed at improving access to higher education and strengthening the state’s academic network. The Directorate of Higher Education has already sent a proposal to the state government for the creation of the required teaching and non-teaching posts for these institutions, officials added. However, with proposals now submitted for both teaching and non-teaching appointments, it is now clear that all 20 institutions will operate as regular government degree colleges under the higher education department. The weather across the Delhi National Capital Region (NCR) has taken a sharp and unexpected turn, bringing with it intense heatwave conditions more typical of May and June, even as April draws to a close. After experiencing relatively mild and pleasant weather in March, reminiscent of February’s lingering chill, residents are now grappling with soaring temperatures and deteriorating air quality, reported IANS. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a continuous heatwave alert has been issued from April 21 to April 24. On April 21, the maximum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 41 degrees Celsius, while the minimum stood at 23 degrees. The situation is expected to worsen over the next few days, with temperatures likely to rise further. The maximum temperature may touch 43 degrees Celsius on April 22 and 23, and similar conditions are expected to persist on April 24, with the minimum temperature hovering around 24 degrees. The guidelines were expected to provide clarity to both colleges and students; however, important questions—regarding grant-in-aid, scholarships, and class sizes—still remain unanswered. The Indian Express spoke to heads of autonomous colleges affiliated to the Savitirbai Phule Pune University (SPPU) to understand their concerns. Professor Sanjay Kharat, principal, Modern College of Arts, Science and Commerce, told The Indian Express, “There are two issues that are not clear. The first is whether the four-year programme will be a grant-in-aid programme.
