As the results for the Delhi Assembly elections poured in, I was reminded of a comment by the late Sushma Swaraj, the last BJP Chief Minister of Delhi. With the votes being counted in November 1998 at the peak of the onion price crisis, it became clear that the BJP was on its way out. Swaraj said, “Ghar ko aag lag gayee ghar ke chirag se (The house was burnt down by a lamp inside the house).” She was referring to the quarrels between various factions of the BJP, primarily with her immediate predecessor, Sahib Singh Verma. Ironically enough, it is the latter’s son who has defeated Arvind Kejriwal today, and the BJP is on its way back to power in Delhi. The BJP has polled a little over 45 per cent of the votes, which is just about 2 percentage points more than the AAP. Delhi Assembly Elections 2025: The Haryana government on Sunday (February 2) declared a paid holiday in all public offices, academic institutions, boards and corporations on February 5 for the assembly election in Delhi. The holiday will allow employees of the state government who are registered voters of Delhi to exercise their franchise. “This provision, under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, and Section 135-B of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 (amended in 1996), applies to employees who are registered voters of NCT of Delhi, allowing them to cast their vote in the general election,” according to an official statement. Employees of factories, shops and private establishments in Haryana who are registered voters of Delhi are also entitled to paid leaves for the purpose, it further said. Delhi Assembly Election 2025: A total of 7,552 electors have chosen the home voting facility for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections. This initiative aims to ensure that senior citizens above 85 years of age and Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) can exercise their right to vote from the comfort of their homes, eliminating the challenges of physically reaching polling stations. The Election Commission’s home voting facility is designed to empower elderly and differently-abled voters, making the electoral process more convenient and barrier-free. Election officials, along with security personnel, will visit the registered voters at their homes to facilitate the voting process in a secure and confidential manner. According to a statement, the Election Commission of India (ECI) deployed 206 teams of polling officers across 11 districts and 70 Assembly constituencies in the National Capital Territory of Delhi (NCT), ensuring smooth and timely execution as per ECI guidelines.
