Denying interim bail to former AAP councillor and 2020 Northeast Delhi riots accused Tahir Hussain to campaign for the Delhi Assembly polls, in which he is contesting as an AIMIM candidate, Justice Pankaj Mithal of the Supreme Court has underlined that Indian citizens “deserve…clean politics” and to achieve this, “people with tainted image’ should “be restricted in some way or the other from participating in the election”. On Wednesday, a two-judge SC bench comprising Justices Mithal and Ahsanuddin Amanullah had delibered a split verdict on Hussain’s interim bail plea. While Justice Mithal dismissed it, Justice Amanulla was of the view that the interim relief can be granted. In light of the contrasting opinions, the matter will now be placed before the Chief Justice of India for allocation to a larger three-judge bench. With more than 1 lakh security personnel on duty, the Delhi Police have come up with elaborate arrangements to conduct polling for Assembly elections in 13,033 booths spread across the Capital as the city votes on February 5. Heightened security presence at 162 border points that connect Delhi with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, and additional support of drones mounted with cameras for 429 sensitive or critical polling stations are in special focus, said officials. The CCTV facility, sources said, will be available in and around all the booths on the day of voting. The booths that have been declared sensitive or critical are on the basis of a detailed security survey, sources revealed, adding that a majority of these 429 polling stations are located in North East, South East, and Outer districts of Delhi.
