With Kozhikode district reporting an average of around 500 fever cases and at least two dozen dengue fever cases every day, the Health department has called for joint efforts to contain its spread. The officials say that the South West monsoon has strengthened, and steps should be taken to avoid the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes that spread dengue fever. Stagnation of water should not be allowed on the premises of houses. The District Medical Officer (DMO) has sought the cooperation of residents’ associations and other organisations to take up steps to reduce the source of the infection. Muscle pain, fever, headache, pain behind the eyes, body fatigue, rashes on the body, among others, are some of the major symptoms of dengue fever. At least 71 dengue and 60 chikungunya cases were reported this year from Pune district’s rural areas. Ahead of National Dengue Day (May 16), health authorities have stepped up awareness campaigns to combat and control the spread of dengue fever. “We want to promote community participation in the dengue awareness programmes and spread correct information about treatment and control measures,” a district health official said. Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease transmitted between humans by the Aedes mosquitoes. The disease manifests as a flu-like illness with symptoms including high fever, headache, vomiting, muscle and joint pains and a characteristic skin rash. According to the World Health Organisation, occasionally it develops into a potentially lethal complication called severe dengue. Chandigarh is witnessing a steady decline in dengue cases since the last week as minimum and maximum temperatures have begun to drop in the city. According to Dr Suman Singh, Director, Health Services, Chandigarh, last week, about 15 cases were being reported daily, but now fewer patients are being diagnosed with dengue, and the coming week will see further decline. So far, the Union Territory (UT) has reported 300 dengue cases. As compared to last year, dengue cases are fewer in Chandigarh, with 2023 recording 454 dengue-positive cases, 2022 reporting 910 cases, and 2021 as many as 1,596 cases. Panchkula so far has reported 1,296 dengue cases this year. As many as four cases were reported on Tuesday. According to Dr Sandeep Jain, District Medical Officer, Panchkula, July to November are peak months for dengue fever, when the Aedes Aegypti mosquito breeds and spreads the virus. The number of dengue cases reported in Gautam Buddh Nagar stood at 516 as of Saturday while the number of malaria cases were at 110, said a senior official of the Health department. The malaria cases increased by 150 per cent from last year’s 44 while dengue cases saw a decrease of 47 per cent from 974 last year. On Saturday alone, the district hospital screened 11 dengue positive cases. “Among the total number of suspected patients, 11 were found to be dengue positive with mild symptoms,” said Dr. Shruti Verma, District Malaria Officer, Gautam Buddh Nagar. Dr Verma said that the district so far has not recorded any death due to dengue whereas last year, two patients in Gautam Buddh Nagar succumbed to dengue. Dengue cases surge in Delhi, over 400 new infections recorded in a week

Delhi has seen a fresh surge in dengue cases, with 401 new infections reported from September 22 to 28, according to official data. Malaria and chikungunya cases have also seen an uptick recently. With the latest surge, the total number of dengue cases in Delhi this year, until September 28, has reached 1,630. Last month alone recorded 1,052 dengue cases until September 28, the data released by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) showed. From September 15 to 21, the city recorded a weekly increase of nearly 300 cases, bringing the caseload to 651. In the previous week ending September 14, Delhi saw a rise of 250 cases. The South Delhi zone has recorded the highest number of cases, followed by the Najafgarh zone. Both malaria and chikungunya cases have seen a marked increase compared to last year. Delhi has reported 67 new malaria cases and 13 chikungunya cases in the September 22-28 period.
