The continued reporting of dengue cases in a ward of the Thripunithura municipality over the past month has raised concern among residents, health authorities and civic representatives. A cluster of cases has been reported from Ward 1, Attaprayil, and despite efforts by civic authorities to contain the spread, the lack of public cooperation in eliminating mosquito breeding sites remains a major concern, civic representatives said. “We have identified a few establishments that are not taking steps to remove waterlogged areas within their premises, which could become mosquito breeding sites. People are not cooperating despite repeated requests. Therefore, we are planning to enter these areas ourselves and undertake cleaning activities from Monday,” said ward councillor Praseetha Miju. Dr. Sona Rajan Manamel, medical officer at the Urban Primary Health Centre, Thripunithura, said 12 dengue cases had been reported from Ward 1, particularly from Parayapparambil Lane and Pulse Nagar Road in Kozhivettumveli. “Preventive measures, including source reduction activities and vector studies, are being carried out to contain the spread. India recorded over 1.13 lakh dengue cases, 94 deaths till November: Govt

India recorded 1,13,440 dengue cases and 94 deaths between January and November 2025, the Union government informed Parliament on Tuesday, reported the IANS. In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel shared state-wise data on the incidence and fatalities caused by the mosquito-borne disease during the year. According to the data, Tamil Nadu reported the highest number of dengue cases at 20,866, followed by Maharashtra with 13,333 cases, and Kerala with 10,239 cases. Kerala also reported the highest number of dengue-related deaths at 49, followed by Maharashtra with 13 deaths, and Tamil Nadu with 12 deaths, the minister said. Dengue over the last five years Patel also shared figures of dengue cases reported nationwide over the past five years, based on data submitted by states and Union Territories to the National Centre for Vector Borne Diseases Control (NCVBDC), according to the IANS. With Kozhikode district reporting an average of around 500 fever cases and at least two dozen dengue fever cases every day, the Health department has called for joint efforts to contain its spread. The officials say that the South West monsoon has strengthened, and steps should be taken to avoid the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes that spread dengue fever. Stagnation of water should not be allowed on the premises of houses. The District Medical Officer (DMO) has sought the cooperation of residents’ associations and other organisations to take up steps to reduce the source of the infection. At least 71 dengue and 60 chikungunya cases were reported this year from Pune district’s rural areas. Ahead of National Dengue Day (May 16), health authorities have stepped up awareness campaigns to combat and control the spread of dengue fever. “We want to promote community participation in the dengue awareness programmes and spread correct information about treatment and control measures,” a district health official said. Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease transmitted between humans by the Aedes mosquitoes. The disease manifests as a flu-like illness with symptoms including high fever, headache, vomiting, muscle and joint pains and a characteristic skin rash. According to the World Health Organisation, occasionally it develops into a potentially lethal complication called severe dengue.
