India men beat Canada; women lose to Denmark

India men beat Canada; women lose to Denmark

The Indian men’s and women’s team had a contrasting start to their campaign at the 2026 Thomas and Uber Cup in Horsens, Denmark on Friday. Up against Canada, the Indian men’s team came-from-behind to register a 4-1 victory, while the women’s team went down to Denmark 2-3 later in the day. India did not have the best of starts to their Thomas Cup campaign as Lakshya Sen went down to the 2025 BWF World Championships medallist Victor Lai in the opening match of the tie. Sen, who had beaten Lai during his run at the 2026 All England Open Super 1000 earlier this year, went down 18-21, 21-19, 21-10 in 71 minutes to hand Canada the lead. But India fought back with ease as Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won their men’s doubles match 21-10, 21-11 over Jonathan Lai and Kevin Lee to put India back on level terms. The former world No 1 pair turned the complexion of the tie as the rest of the players rode the momentum to close out the match …

Greenland, Denmark come together to face Trump despite ‘dark chapter’ | Explained

Greenland and Denmark have formed a united front, setting aside their ‘dark chapter’ to respond to US President Donald Trump and his repeated threats to acquire the mineral-rich Danish territory. The Arctic island, a Danish colony for three centuries, still has a complex relationship with Denmark. A woman walks in front of a building displaying the Greenlandic flag in Nuuk, Greenland. (AFP) The island’s main political parties all support independence, but they disagree on how to achieve it. Trump’s interest in the region led them to form a coalition government in March last year. ALSO READ | What’s in Trump’s Greenland deal? 5 things to know after key agreement with NATO in Davos Greenland’s leaders also said last week they were not interested in Trump’s attempt to take control of the vast island, an idea he strongly pushed before stepping back on Wednesday after reaching what he called a “framework” deal on Arctic security with NATO’s secretary-general. At the peak of the crisis, Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said that if the government had to …

Thousands march in Greenland to support Arctic island in the face of Donald Trump’s threats to take it over | World News

Thousands of people in Greenland and Denmark have protested against comments by US President Donald Trump about taking control of Greenland, an autonomous territory under Danish rule. Demonstrations were held in Greenland’s capital Nuuk and in several Danish cities, including Copenhagen. Protesters waved Greenland’s red-and-white flag and held signs reading “Hands off Greenland” and “Greenland for Greenlanders”. The protests took place as a delegation from the US Congress arrived in Copenhagen. The group is led by Democratic Senator Chris Coons, who said Trump’s language on Greenland was “not constructive”. Why Trump wants Greenland Trump says Greenland is important for US national security. The island lies between North America and the Arctic and is seen as key for monitoring shipping routes and missile threats. It is also rich in natural resources. ‘He can’t comment on the conditions here while sitting in Denmark’: BAI gen secy after Anders Antonsen pulls out of India Open | Badminton News

With the India Open coming under the scanner after Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt and had Anders Antonsen criticising the conditions with the latter even pulling out of the tournament citing ‘extreme pollution’ in New Delhi, Badminton Association of India general secretary Sanjay Mishra opened up about the recent controversies. Talking about World no. 3 Antonsen’s withdrawal, Mishra said to ANI that “I had a chat with the BWF. He (Danish shuttler Anders Antonsen) can’t comment on the conditions here while sitting in Denmark. Can I talk about Denmark’s conditions sitting here in India? Actually, he is a committed BWF player. The BWF committed players have to mandatorily play these big tournaments. His reason for withdrawal was not accepted by BWF and he was fined.” He also talked about the issues pointed out by Blichfeldt on Tuesday, where she called out the playing and training conditions at the IG Indoor Stadium, where the 2026 edition of India Open is being hosted – at a bigger arena compared to KD Jadhav Indoor stadium inside the same complex, where …

Can NATO withstand the Trump-Greenland test?

Can NATO withstand the Trump-Greenland test?

January 14, 2026 11:32 AM IST First published on: Jan 14, 2026 at 11:32 AM IST The United States’ recent actions under President Trump reveal a brazen disdain for international law and multilateralism. Within days of justifying a military strike on Venezuela — and the capture of President Nicolás Maduro — as a “law enforcement operation”, and following his withdrawal from climate treaties and key UN institutions, Trump has turned northwards, insisting that Greenland — an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark — can and should be taken by force. This is not reckless and aggressive rhetoric in isolation, but part of a disturbing pattern, marking a deeply unsettling moment for both the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) and the post–Second World War international order. It raises an uncomfortable question: Can a security arrangement survive if the alliance’s most powerful member openly entertains territorial ambitions against another member? Trump’s actions resonate with classical realist assumptions that great powers pursue self-interest in an anarchic system largely unfettered by moral or legal restraint. Greenland’s strategic location …

After Venezuela, Donald Trump points a finger at Greenland

After Venezuela, Donald Trump points a finger at Greenland

DONALD TRUMP’S appetite in the western hemisphere appears insatiable. Just a day after snatching Nicolas Maduro, Venezuela’s strongman leader, Mr Trump set his sights on his next target: Greenland. “We need Greenland from the standpoint of national security,” the president told reporters aboard Air Force One on January 4th. The MAGA machine stepped into gear. Katie Miller, wife to the president’s influential adviser Stephen Miller, posted a map of Greenland overlaid with the star-spangled banner and a caption reading: “SOON”. PREMIUM President Trump speaking in Florida after the Venezuela incursion. Greenland and Denmark, and much of Europe, are in shock. A year ago, Mr Trump’s threats against the self-governing Arctic territory of 56,000 people, which is part of Denmark, elicited mostly derision and distaste among European leaders. This time is different. “Enough is enough,” responded Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Greenland’s prime minister. “No more pressure. No more innuendo. No more fantasies about annexation.” Mette Frederiksen, Denmark’s prime minister, implored Mr Trump to drop the threats, adding that they “should be taken seriously”. European countries quickly closed ranks: …

Scotland fans shake the earth after win over Denmark to qualify for World Cup after 1998 | Football News

Scotland fans shake the earth after win over Denmark to qualify for World Cup after 1998 | Football News

As Scotland defeated Denmark on Tuesday to book their place at the World Cup for the first time since 1998, it was not only the Hampden Park that was shaking. The earth was shaking too. According to the British Geological Survey (BGS), Scotland fans’ outburst of emotion when Kenny McLean scored from the halfway line to seal a stunning 4-2 win was equivalent to a very small earthquake. The BGS said McLean’s goal was picked up by its seismic activity monitors at the Glasgow Geothermal Observatory in Dalmarnock, around 2km from Hampden Park. A reading taken between 21:48 and 21:50 — when McLean’s audacious shot hit the net — was measured as a surge of between -1 and zero on the Richter Scale and produced the equivalent of 200kW, enough to power between 25 and 40 car batteries. The full-time whistle also produced a reading, as did Kieran Tierney’s superb goal to give Scotland a 3-2 lead. Stadium events causing seismic activity in Scotland are not unheard of. Last year’s Taylor Swift concerts in Edinburgh …
