India fall to Denmark in opener

India fall to Denmark in opener

India faced a crushing 1-4 defeat against Denmark in their opening Group D encounter of the Sudirman Cup on Sunday. Despite a spirited performance from Tanisha Crasto and Shruti Mishra in women’s doubles, the Indians were thoroughly outplayed in the remaining matches. Denmark grabbed the first win of the tie, winning the mixed doubles match in straight games (21-13, 21-14) against the Indian duo of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto. The Danish pair looked in complete control throughout the match, never allowing the Indians to settle into any rhythm. World No. 3 Anders Antonsen then doubled Denmark’s lead as he outclassed India’s experienced HS Prannoy in straight games (21-15, 21-16) in the men’s singles match. Prannoy, who has been in decent form lately, struggled to counter Antonsen’s relentless attack and precise shot placement, particularly in the second set where he was forming a comeback, leading 11-10 at the interval. The world No. 1 Danish duo of Kim Astrup and Anders Rasmussen then outclassed the young Indian combination of Hariharan Amsakarunan and Ruban Rethinasabapathi in straight …

Ruben Dias Back For Cristiano Ronaldo-Led Portugal Against Denmark

Ruben Dias has returned to the Cristiano Ronaldo-led Portuguese squad for their upcoming Nations League quarter-final against Denmark. Manchester City defender Dias, 27, had been sidelined with a muscular injury picked up in Premier League action. Sporting Lisbon’s teenage striker Geovany Quenda has also earned a callup for the first time. “At 17, being in the national team shows his potential,” said coach Roberto Martinez, insisting the youngster’s age was “not a problem”.   “What matters is quality, commitment and work,” the Spaniard told a press conference.  The choice of those who are selected was “meticulous and professional”, according to Martinez. “If I could call them all, I would because they deserve it, but it’s not possible,” he added, with Al-Hilal defender Joao Cancelo and Al-Nassr midfielder Otavio both injured.  Portugal play Denmark on March 20 in Copenhagen and at home in Lisbon the following Sunday. Can India cross the group stage huddle after 8 years?

The draw for the 19th edition of the prestigious Sudirman Cup was revealed by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) on Thursday. India has been placed in a group with Indonesia, Denmark, and England. The Sudirman Cup is a biennial international badminton championship contested by mixed national teams. This year, the event is set to take place in Xiamen, China, from April 27 to May 4. These teams are divided equally into four groups and will face each other in a single round-robin format. Simon Kjaer, best remembered for coming to the aid of Christian Eriksen at Euro 2020, retires | Football News

Former Denmark football team captain Simon Kjaer who is best remembered for rushing to teammate Christian Eriksen’s aid when the midfielder collapsed in a Euro 2020 match, retired from football on Monday. This was despite the player getting offered a chance to play after leaving AC Milan as a free agent last year. In a Euro 2020 match against Finland, Kjaer led his teammates in shielding Eriksen from view on the field after the star playmaker collapsed because of cardiac arrest. Kjaer also consoled Eriksen’s partner on the field. After Eriksen was stabilized, the Kjaer-captained Denmark reached the semi-finals of the European Championships after a long, arduous wait of 29 years. Although the Red and Whites finally ran out of steam in the ongoing tournament during their 2-1 defeat to England, their ascension from the depths of tragedy touched the hearts of millions. After failing to qualify in the previous edition five years back, Denmark entered the tournament as “dark horses”, boasting an amicable and ambitious head coach and a multi-faceted squad of lionhearts. Denmark Open badminton: PV Sindhu shows familiar failings as she loses to Indonesian Gregoria MariskaTunjung in quarters | Badminton News

A second-game revival did little to help PV Sindhu free herself from the silken web of Gregoria MariskaTunjung’s shotmaking, as the Indian lost her quarterfinal of the Denmark Open despite a mid-match defiance. Sindhu faded out 13-21, 21-16, 9-21 in 57 minutes in Odense against the Paris Olympics bronze medallist, with most of the warts in her game repeatedly exposed under the glare of the Indonesian’s simple strategy of making the Indian twist and turn. In the opener, playing from the relatively unhelpful side, it was Sindhu’s flank defence that Tunjung picked to drill holes, with the most basic of attacking plays for 16 minutes. The simplicity of Tunjung’s classical game is how she appears to sleep-walk through it, even while it’s solidly effective. She alternated Sindhu across and straight close to the sidelines, and threw in a variation of two straights or crosses once in a while. The Indian’s side movements were not sharp to retrieve on opposing wings, and her reach comes to naught if she doesn’t anticipate and commit to the yo-yo-ing …

PV Sindhu Goes Down In Quarters, India’s Campaign Ends At Denmark Open

File photo of PV Sindhu© AFP Indian star PV Sindhu bowed out with a quarterfinal loss to Paris Olympics bronze-winner Gregoria Tunjung as the country’s campaign came to an end in the Denmark Open badminton tournament on Friday. The 29-year-old Sindhu went down 13-21, 21-16, 9-21 in a nearly hour-long clash. The world number 8 from Indonesia, who had won just two matches from their 12 past encounters, was at her dominant best despite Sindhu managing to claim the second game. Top-seed An Se Young of South Korea will be the fifth-seeded Tunjung’s semifinal opponent. Tunjung displayed command on the proceedings and reeled of eight points in a row to take the first game rather easily. But Sindhu, who had stunned the fourth-seeded world number seven han Yue of China in the pre-quarters, looked a different player in the second game and raced to a 6-1 lead before her opponent levelled it six-all and rallied to a 9-7 lead. Sindhu once again fought her way back to snatch the lead at 11-10 after …

PV Sindhu Edges Past Han Yue To Enter Denmark Open Quarter-Finals

Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu overcame a sluggish start to defeat world number seven Han Yue of China in a thrilling contest, progressing to the quarterfinals of the Denmark Open Super 750 badminton tournament on Thursday. Sindhu, a former world champion and currently ranked 18th, won 18-21 21-12 21-16 in a second-round match that lasted 63 minutes. This marks her first win over a top-10 player since defeating Han in the Malaysia Masters final in May. With this victory, Sindhu, who is currently working with Anup Sridhar and Lee Hyun-il, extended her head-to-head record against Han to 7-1 in eight encounters. A finalist in the 2015 edition, Sindhu, the lone surviving Indian in the fray, will next face either Indonesia’s Paris Olympic bronze medallist Gregoria Mariska Tunjung or Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt in only her third quarterfinals this year. She had reached the last eight in French Open and Spain Madrid Masters, apart from the finals in Malaysia. Sindhu, who returned medal-less from Paris for the first time in three Olympics, has an overwhelming …

Indian shuttlers endured a tough day at the Denmark Open Super 750 tournament on Wednesday, with the country’s challenge in both women’s and mixed doubles ending in heartbreaking first-round defeats. The women’s doubles pairing of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand fought valiantly but ultimately fell to Malaysia’s fifth-seeded duo, Pearly Tan and Muralitharan Thinaah, in a grueling three-game match. After taking the first game 21-19, the Indian pair couldn’t maintain their momentum, losing 17-21 and 15-21 in a battle that stretched for over an hour. Despite their previous 1-5 head-to-head record against the world No. 7 Malaysian opponents, Treesa and Gayatri gave a strong performance, showing promise but bowing out early. In the mixed doubles, the experienced Indian pair of B. Sumeeth Reddy and N. Sikki Reddy also suffered a narrow defeat.
