A major rail accident was narrowly avoided on Thursday morning when the Chennai Central-New Jalpaiguri Express derailed near Jakhapura in Odisha’s Jajpur district, reported the IANS. According to East Coast Railway (ECoR) officials, the incident occurred at around 8.51 am while the train was passing through Jakhapura Yard. One AC coach and two general coaches derailed within the yard limits. Railway authorities said the train was travelling at a very slow speed at the time of the derailment, which helped prevent serious damage. In an official statement, ECoR confirmed that there was no loss of life and no injuries to any passengers, as per the IANS. “A minor derailment involving Train No. 22611 Chennai-New Jalpaiguri Express occurred at 08:51 hrs today morning, while the train was passing through Jajpur Yard (JKPR),” the East Coast Railway (ECoR) said in a release. Several trains on the Mangaluru-Shoranur route were delayed for hours after a goods train derailed at Pallippuram, near Pattambi, on Sunday. The goods train on its way from Mangaluru to Palakkad derailed around 11.30 a.m. An engineering team from Shoranur shifted the train to another track and restored traffic by 2 p.m. Shoranur-bound trains such as Eranad Express (16605), Parasuram Express (16649), Lokmanya Tilak Terminus-Kochuveli Superfast Express (22113), Nizamuddin-Thiruvananthapuram Express (22634), Kozhikode-Thiruvananthapuram Janshatabdi Express (12075), and Kozhikode-Palakkad Passenger (06071) were delayed. The Kozhikode-Palakkad passenger train short-terminated at Shoranur. Railway officials said trains towards Mangaluru were not affected. Two coaches of Kalka-Delhi Express derailed Thursday morning around 4.45 am at Kalka railway station, leading to the delay of the Kalka-Delhi Shatabdi Express. Two of its coaches suddenly derailed and sank into the ground, disrupting the railway line. The train was delayed by 36 minutes from Chandigarh and arrived 45 minutes late at New Delhi. It started from Chandigarh at 7.29 am later than its usual time of 6.45 am.
