Maharashtra launches surprise inspections of blood centres after FDA detects irregularities

In a major move to strengthen the safety, transparency, and quality of blood stock management, the Maharashtra Public Health Department, through the State Blood Transfusion Council (SBTC), launched a statewide surprise inspection drive at blood centres. As part of the special campaign, all the blood centres in Pune, Solapur, Nashik, and Mumbai were subjected to unannounced inspections between July 17 and 19. The special drive was conducted in accordance with the directives issued by the SBTC on June 27. As blood is classified as a “drug” under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, strict compliance with quality, safety, and transparency norms in its collection, processing, storage, and distribution is mandatory.  Disclaimer: We do not own any of the content, ideas, images, or text presented here. Chandrayaan-3 detects surprisingly active plasma over the Moon’s south pole | Technology News

Chandrayaan-3 detects surprisingly active plasma over the Moon’s south pole | Technology News

Scientists have discovered that the area around the Moon’s south-polar region is much more electrically alive than we thought. Data from India’s Chandrayaan-3 mission from its lander Vikram show that just above the surface, the “plasma” (a mix of charged particles) is far denser and more energetic than earlier remote observations. Plasma is often described as the fourth state of matter, a blend of charged particles such as ions and free electrons. Although it is electrically neutral overall, it behaves very differently from ordinary gas due to its strong response to electromagnetic forces. On the Moon, this thin plasma layer, sometimes called the lunar ionosphere, is shaped by a complex mix of processes. A constant flux of solar wind streams of electrons and ions rushed out from the Sun and strikes the Moon’s airless surface.  Through the photoelectric effect, high-energy sunlight also removes electrons from surface atoms, increasing the ionised environment. The Moon receives a new supply of charged particles from our planet’s extended magnetic field as it drifts into Earth’s magnetotail for a few …

NASA Satellite Detects Tree Leaf Changes as Early Volcano Eruption Warning Signal

NASA Satellite Detects Tree Leaf Changes as Early Volcano Eruption Warning Signal

NASA scientists might soon be able to forecast volcanic eruptions by monitoring how trees respond from space. Now, in a new collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution, they have discovered that tree leaves grow lusher and greener when previously dormant volcanic carbon dioxide seeps up from the ground — an early warning that a cone of magma is pushing upwards. Now, using satellites such as Landsat 8 and data from the recent AVUELO mission, scientists think this biological response could be visible remotely, serving as an added layer of early warning for eruptions in high-risk areas that currently menace millions worldwide. NASA Uses Tree Greening as Satellite Clue for Early Volcano Eruption Warnings in Remote Regions As per the research by NASA’s Earth Science Division at Ames Research Centre, greening occurs when trees absorb volcanic carbon dioxide released as magma rises. These emissions precede sulfur dioxide and are harder to detect directly from orbit. While carbon dioxide does not always appear obvious in satellite images, its downstream effects — enhanced vegetation, for example — can help reinforce existing volcanic early …

Scientists Detects Most Energetic Neutrino Ever in the Mediterranean Sea

Scientists Detects Most Energetic Neutrino Ever in the Mediterranean Sea

A neutrino with an energy level never observed before has been detected in the depths of the Mediterranean Sea. The subatomic particle, measuring an estimated 220 quadrillion electron volts, was recorded by a detector within the Cubic Kilometre Neutrino Telescope (KM3NeT). This discovery marks a significant milestone, as it surpasses previous neutrino detections by nearly 100 times in terms of energy. The precise origin of this particle remains undeetermined, though it is believed to have been generated by a high-energy cosmic event. Scientists are investigating its source and potential links to extreme astrophysical phenomena. High-Energy Neutrino Tracked in Deep-Sea Detector According to findings published in Nature, the neutrino was identified when it briefly interacted with KM3NeT’s sensors, located at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. The telescope, divided into two sections—Astroparticle Research with Cosmics in the Abyss (ARCA) and Oscillation Research with Cosmics in the Abyss (ORCA)—is designed to capture rare, high-energy neutrinos. The detection was made in February 2023 by ARCA, positioned 80 kilometres off the coast of Sicily and submerged 3.5 kilometres below …

NASA’s Juno Detects Io’s Most Powerful Volcanic Eruption Yet

NASA’s Juno Detects Io’s Most Powerful Volcanic Eruption Yet

A volcanic eruption of unprecedented scale has been observed on Jupiter’s moon Io, with a massive hotspot detected in the southern hemisphere. The discovery was made by NASA’s Juno spacecraft during a flyby on 27 December 2024. The heat energy released from this eruption has been estimated at around 80 trillion watts, surpassing the total energy output of all power plants on Earth by six times. Io, the most volcanically active body in the solar system, experiences extreme geological activity due to the gravitational forces exerted by Jupiter. This tidal flexing causes internal heating, leading to continuous volcanic eruptions across its surface. New Hotspot Revealed by NASA’s Juno Spacecraft According to NASA, data from the Juno spacecraft’s Jovian Infrared Auroral Mapper (JIRAM) instrument has confirmed the presence of a massive new volcanic hotspot on Io. The eruption site appears to be fueled by a single, extensive magma chamber, covering an estimated 105,000 square kilometres. This newly detected feature is believed to be the largest volcanic structure on Io, exceeding the well-documented Loki Patera lava lake, …
