District Congress Committee (DCC) president Martin George alleged that the hastily conducted written examination was intended to appoint CPI(M) loyalists before the new government assumes office. Oscars 2027: India’s traditional selection process for Academy Awards might get disrupted by new rules | Hollywood News

4 min readMumbaiMay 2, 2026 11:53 AM IST The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has introduced a series of rule updates across multiple categories, reaffirming the importance of human authorship while stopping short of banning the use of artificial intelligence in filmmaking. Among the more consequential changes are those affecting the Best International Feature Film category, long regarded as one of the most contentious sections of the Oscars. Under the revised framework, eligibility has been expanded to include films that have won top awards at major international film festivals such as Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Toronto, Busan, and Sundance. This marks a significant shift away from the traditional model, where countries submit a single official entry through national selection committees. In practical terms, this means that a film no longer depends solely on being chosen by a country to qualify for consideration. Instead, recognition at a major festival could itself secure eligibility. For instance, recent Cannes prize-winners would now fall within the Academy’s expanded criteria, potentially allowing them to be considered even if they …

With cost of inputs rising and exports disrupted, textile units in Perambalur take a hit

Textile manufacturing units in Perambalur district are facing a mounting pressure as raw material prices continue to surge amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia, triggering concerns over production cuts and financial strain. Industry sources said the prices of key raw materials such as polyester fibre and synthetic yarn, largely derived from petroleum products, have increased sharply in recent weeks. The surge is linked to disruptions in crude oil supply and shipping routes in the Gulf region. It is said that polyester fibre prices alone have climbed steeply, with similar trends seen across other synthetic fibres used in textile production. The situation has been worsened by delays in imports and escalating freight charges, making it increasingly difficult for small and medium-scale units to sustain operations. According to C. Balakrishnan, merchandiser of a Karur-based textile company, raw material costs, particularly dyes, have increased by 15% to 30%. Polyester prices have risen by around ₹40 a kg.
