“D Gukesh World Champion But Magnus Carlsen Considered Better”: Chess Great Garry Kasparov

“D Gukesh World Champion But Magnus Carlsen Considered Better”: Chess Great Garry Kasparov

Russian chess icon Garry Kasparov, whose record of being the youngest world champion was bettered by D Gukesh, feels that the Indian is in a “different situation” compared to him as Norwegian Magnus Carlsen is considered, “by all metrics”, a better player than the Chennai teenager. Gukesh was 17 when he defeated China’s reigning world champion Ding Liren in a 14-game showdown to claim the coveted title last year. Kasparov was 22 when he clinched the world crown back in 1985, beating compatriot Anatoly Karpov. “It’s a phenomenal accomplishment (Gukesh’ world championship win). But I beat the strongest player in the world. Gukesh is in a different situation because Magnus is there. “So yeah Gukesh is official world champion, there is no doubt about it, but there is somebody else who is widely considered, by all metrics, as a better player,” Kasparov told the YouTube channel of Saint Louis Chess Club during the Superbet Chess Classic in Bucharest, Romania. This is not the first time that a comparison has been made between Gukesh …

Chess: After Rare Loss, India’s D Gukesh Eyes Comeback Against Fabiano Caruana

Chess: After Rare Loss, India’s D Gukesh Eyes Comeback Against Fabiano Caruana

World champion D Gukesh will have his task cut out as he looks to stage a comeback against Fabiano Caruana of the USA in the Freestyle Grand Slam chess tournament in Hamburg, Germany. Gukesh suffered a rare setback in normal time control on Sunday, losing to Caruana in the first game of the quarterfinals. The Indian is now under pressure to perform with his black pieces and draw level with Caruana who has been dreaming to be a world champion for a few years now. The freestyle chess is built around 960 random positions shifting the initial position of the pieces from the base rank while the pawns remain intact. The legendary Bobby Fischer was the first to advocate freestyle chess, and given the support the new format has received, it could well be the future of the sport. Gukesh will have to fight hard, as his opening choices have come under scrutiny already while a whole new repertoire needs to be built. Caruana was almost staring at a defeat in the opening …

“Long, Crazy Day”: R Praggnanandhaa Reveals Raw Emotion After Beating D Gukesh To Tata Steel Chess Title

Grandmaster Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa didn’t envisage such a “crazy day” with eight hours of world class performance after which he pipped reigning World Champion D Gukesh to win his maiden Tata Steel Chess Tournament. “It was very long, close to eight hours, the first game itself lasted like 6.5 hours and then we had this blitz, it was a crazy day,” he said. On the impact of this victory, Praggnanandhaa said, “This is a very special event in the chess world and I have seen games from this tournament growing up. Last year, it did not go my way so I was really motivated for this tournament.” “I think it showed in my play that I was quite ambitious in all the games trying to fight, that’s why we saw many decisive games.” For the records, Praggnanandhaa won six drew five and lost two games overall. About his future plans, Praggnanandhaa said the he will be competing at the Prague Masters. “I knew what went wrong in the last six months and I knew …

“Mere Paas Panch Hai”: Viswanathan Anand’s Tongue-In-Cheek Post After R Praggnanandhaa Beats D Gukesh

Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa edged out world champion Gukesh Dommaraju in a nail-biting tiebreaker to decide the winner of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2025, and legendary Indian grandmaster Viswanathan Anand was all praise for the duo. However, Anand couldn’t help himself putting in a cheeky response, reminding everyone of his own achievements as well. While Anand gave due appreciation to 19-year-old Praggnanandhaa and 18-year-old Gukesh, as the former came from behind to win the tiebreaker 2-1, he also put in a humorous tweet about his own success at the tournament. “Mere paas panch hai… IYKYK (I have five, if you know you know),” posted Viswanathan Anand on X. On the occasion of two Indian grandmasters fighting it out for the Tata Steel Chess tournament, it was a tongue-in-cheek reference to the fact that Anand himself has won five titles at the tournament. D Gukesh, R Praggnanandhaa Set Up Dramatic All-Indian Tie-Breaker In Tata Steel Chess Tournament

World champion D Gukesh and Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa lost on a dramatic final day but still set up a tie-breaker at the end of the 13th and final round of the Tata Steel Chess tournament here on Sunday. Gukesh lost his first game as the world champion, bowing to some energetic play by compatriot Arjun Erigaisi while Praggnanandhaa went down against Vincent Keymer, whose technique was impeccable on the final day. Interestingly enough, the chess buffs were reminded of the 2013 Candidates tournament where Magnus Carlsen of Norway and Vladimir Kramnik of Russia were leading together but both lost. Carlsen won on tie-break and went on to beat Viswanathan Anand to be crowned the world champion for the first time. Despite the loss, Praggnanandhaa will play tie-break games of shorter duration against Gukesh after the two ended with identical 8.5 points each. The other contender Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan was denied the full point by P Harikrishna, who played a hard fought draw. In the tiebreaker, the players will play two games of …

Praaggnandhaa And Gukesh In Joint Lead At Tata Steel Masters

World Champion D Gukesh played out a draw with Jorden van Foreest of Holland, while Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa beat Alexey Sarana of Serbia as the two Indians shared the lead after a thrilling day at the Tata Steel Masters. Praggnanandhaa notched up his third consecutive win to take his tally to a commendable 8.5 points, same as his compatriot Gukesh after the 12th and penultimate round. The two Indians are now poised for an exciting finish in the prestigious tournament, with the remarkable prospect of one of them potentially clinching the title—a first in Tata Steel Masters history. Eying the top spot after the 11th round, Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan was outdone by Arjun Erigaisi and is all but out of title contention on 7.5 points. Praggnanandhaa was involved in another Queen’s gambit declined opening. Only this time he was playing with white pieces. It was quite a contrast from his previous round game against Caruana as Sarana went for an early advance of king side pawns and then castled on the queen …

"New Goals…": Gukesh, Set To Face Carlsen In 2025, Eyes Fresh Targets

D Gukesh climbed dizzying heights in the past one month, a World Championship triumph getting garnished by the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award recently, but the chess prodigy now wants to reset his focus and goals to tackle a “challenging” 2025. Gukesh will be seen in action in the Tata Steel tournament in Wijk aan Zee in Netherlands, beginning on January 17. The event will see participation from frontline players such as Anish Giri, Arjun Erigaisi, Fabiano Caruana and R Praggnanandhaa among others. “Yeah, 2025 will offer a very tough challenge. A lot of new and interesting tournaments are coming up. The world championship was in the past. I’m very happy about it and all the awards and receptions,” Gukesh told a select media gathering during the felicitation ceremony organised by WestBridge Capital here on Sunday. “But now, I have started thinking about new goals, new tournaments and new ways to prepare. Ding Liren, Accused Of Deliberately Losing To D Gukesh, Opens Up On World Chess Championship Defeat

File photo of Ding Liren and D Gukesh© FIDE Chinese Grandmaster Ding Liren has opened up on his loss to India’s D Gukesh at the World Chess Championship 2024 in Singapore last week. Ding, who was the defending champion, made a costly error in the decisive Game 14, allowing Gukesh to become the youngest ever world champion. Following his defeat to Gukesh, Ding was accused of deliberately losing the match by Russian Chess Federation chief Andrei Filatov. Russian news agency TASS quoted Filatov asking the International Chess Federation (FIDE) to open a probe and investigate the result. Former world champions Magnus Carlsen and Vladimir Kramnik had also questioned the quality of chess on display during the whole course of the 14-game tie Ding and Gukesh. Amid criticism, Ding has defended himself and Gukesh, insisting that the quality of the games was not so low. “Yes, I tried my best in the match and you could see my usage of time. I used a large amount of time in the opening phase when I …

Indian Chess In 2024: D Gukesh Caps Off Watershed Year With World Championship Title After Olympiad Triumph

Indian Chess In 2024: D Gukesh Caps Off Watershed Year With World Championship Title After Olympiad Triumph

Indian chess has been on the upward trajectory for the past two years or so, but no one can deny that 2024 has been a year where the sport took a quantum leap. The year kicked-off with Candidates tournament in Toronto, Canada where five Indians made the cut in the open field despite the tricky qualification demands of the competition. Only eight qualify for the Candidates. While D Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa and Vidit Gujrathi made the cut in the eight-man line-up, Koneru Humpy and Vaishali Rameshbabu were part of the eight-women category. In the men’s category, Gukesh earned his shot at challenging Ding Liren for the world title, overcoming several challenges despite the presence of veterans like Ian Nepomniachtchi, Fabiano Caruana and Hikaru Nakamura. He became the youngest-ever to win a shot at the world title. However, this was just the start of what turned out to be an unprecedented year for Indian chess. With over 180 nations participating in the Chess Olympiad in Budapest, the Indian contingent won open team golds in both …
