Tamil Nadu’s own-tax effort has ‘collapsed’, says White Paper

The White Paper presented by Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson on Tuesday said “the State’s own-tax effort has collapsed”. Giving an account of how the State’s Own Tax Revenue (SOTR) fared in the last five years vis-à-vis three “peer States” (Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Karnataka), the White Paper stated that the SOTR marked “the biggest component which is most directly within the State’s control and the most reliable indicator of fiscal effort”. The State’s “own-tax revenue is drawn from five principal sources”, which pertained to commercial taxes (Goods and Services Tax), Value Added Tax (VAT) on petroleum, State Excise and VAT on liquor, Stamps & Registration, Motor Vehicle Tax, and other taxes. Within the broader commercial taxes, GST accounted for around 53%; VAT on liquor, 28%; and VAT on petroleum products, 19%. “[Revenue from] Commercial taxes, as a proportion of GSDP (Gross State Domestic Product), have declined from approximately 4.53% in 2021-22 to approximately 3.89% in 2025-26 — a decline that was not seen in the case of peer States,” the document said. Pointing out that …

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi seemingly in tears, consoled by KKR coach after his effort not enough to prevent RR’s second defeat

Modern cricket is often judged by numbers and statistics, but it is the players’ tangible emotions that truly define the essence of the game. A player can be one of the greats or just starting out in their career; expressing emotions on the field is what makes them human and helps them take the next step. Winning and losing are often considered part and parcel of the game, but certain moments caught on the field and shared with the fans help them connect on a deeper level. A similar moment was captured yesterday, April 19, at the Iconic Eden Gardens following the clash between Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is quickly ascending in the Orange Cap tally (REUTERS) The video captured an emotional 15-year-old RR rising star, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, disheartened and possibly in tears after his side fell short against hosts KKR. Not single govt`s but a collective effort in curbing Naxalism: Shiv Sena (UBT)

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi on Tuesday said that efforts to curb Naxalism in India cannot be attributed to a single government but it was a collective effort. Speaking to ANI, Chaturvedi accused the present regime of claiming sole credit for ending Naxalism and termed it “unfortunate.” “The action against Naxalism began during the UPA era, and now they are trying to take credit for its end. This cannot be the contribution of just one government. It is a continuous process. If someone tries to claim sole credit for it, that is unfortunate,” she said. Congress denies claims of shielding Naxalites in Chhattisgarh Earlier in the day, Congress leader Manickam Tagore rejected Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s charge that the Congress government in Chhattisgarh had “shielded Naxalites.” Tagore refuted the allegations, defending the Congress and stating that the party had lost several leaders in the fight against Naxalism. He asserted that the credit for combating Naxalism should go to security forces rather than political leaders. “We expected the Home Minister to speak in his …
