India’s most powerful 12,000-horsepower electric locomotives will reportedly feature waterless urinals for loco pilots, while existing locomotives from the Madhepura factory in Bihar will be retrofitted with the facility. The move addresses a long-standing operational challenge for train drivers, who currently have no access to toilets or urinals inside locomotives. Travelling from the GT (Grand Trunk) Road belt of Haryana directly to the national capital will be convenient for commuters and daily passengers, as the Delhi government has introduced five new electric air-conditioned low-floor buses. The five buses will make 10 trips daily in both directions, linking the two cities. (HT Photo) The new interstate public transport will link Maharana Pratap ISBT at Kashmere Gate and Karnal via Singhu Border, Rai, Bahalgarh, Murthal, Gannaur, Samalkha, Panipat, Gharaunda and Madhuban. The bus service along with others, was flagged off by Delhi lieutenant governor (LG) Taranjit Singh Sandhu and chief minister Rekha Gupta from the Delhi University Sports Complex on Wednesday. Officials said that the service, which marked the beginning of a wider expansion of electric public transport services, covers an approximately 133-km one-way corridor at an affordable fare of ₹212 from Delhi to Karnal. Two youths were allegedly tortured and beaten by a mob on suspicion of theft in Madhya Pradesh’s Raisen district earlier this month. The youths were tied to the pole, beaten and given electric shocks by the villagers over suspicion of theft. The youths were allegedly tied to a pole in the farm and assaulted by the villagers in an attempt to force a confession out of them. The state government is set to roll down Rajiv Gandhi Swarozgaar Start-up Yojana Phase-IV to create self-employment opportunities for unemployed youth while strengthening public transport connectivity and promoting environmentally sustainable mobility across Himachal Pradesh. Himachal Pradesh chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said that the scheme reflects the state government’s commitment to empowering unemployed youth. (HT File) To encourage participation, the government will provide 50% capital subsidy for the purchase of electric buses and 30% capital subsidy for diesel buses to eligible beneficiaries for operations on about 1,000 identified routes across the state. In addition, beneficiaries will receive a monthly operational incentive of ₹65,000 for electric and ₹50,000 for diesel buses for a period of five years. Passenger buses with a minimum seating capacity of 32 passengers, both diesel and electric, will be eligible. The Delhi government has approved a new Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy that offers a 100 per cent exemption from road tax and registration fees for electric cars priced at Rs 30 lakh or less (ex-showroom), reported the PTI. The policy was approved by the Delhi Cabinet on Monday and will come into effect from 1 July. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the government will invest around Rs 15,000 crore over the next four years to promote electric mobility and reduce vehicular pollution in the national capital, according to the PTI. She said the policy is a major step towards making Delhi a pollution-free city by March 31, 2030. Purchase incentives for EV buyers To encourage more people to switch to electric vehicles, the government has announced financial incentives for buyers, the news agency reported. Several electric vehicles were damaged after a fire gutted an EV showroom and three other shops in Gujarat”s Surat city on Thursday morning, officials said. No person was injured in the incident which occurred in the Adajan area, they said.  Flames and smoke covered the area, causing panic among people. The incident occurred around 2.43 am in Vishnu Garden, where the family lives in a two-storey house. The ground floor has a shop and the parking area. Police said the electric scooter was parked behind the shop when the fire started, suspected from a short circuit. New Delhi: Delhi transport minister Pankaj Kumar Singh has asked for suggestions from drivers, conductors and depot managers to strengthen last-mile connectivity as part of an ongoing route rationalisation exercise for electric buses, officials said on Wednesday. Officials said the initiative is part of efforts to deploy nine-metre DEVI electric buses more efficiently and improve accessibility. It covers 121 routes in the east zone, 181 in the west zone and 194 in the north zone, with work underway for the south zone.
