The Delhi government has approved a new Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy that offers a 100 per cent exemption from road tax and registration fees for electric cars priced at Rs 30 lakh or less (ex-showroom), reported the PTI.
The policy was approved by the Delhi Cabinet on Monday and will come into effect from 1 July.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the government will invest around Rs 15,000 crore over the next four years to promote electric mobility and reduce vehicular pollution in the national capital, according to the PTI.
She said the policy is a major step towards making Delhi a pollution-free city by March 31, 2030.
Purchase incentives for EV buyers
To encourage more people to switch to electric vehicles, the government has announced financial incentives for buyers, the news agency reported.
Under the policy:
– Buyers of electric two-wheelers will receive a subsidy of Rs 30,000 in the first year, Rs 20,000 in the second year and Rs 10,000 in the third year.
– Buyers of electric three-wheelers will receive incentives of Rs 50,000, Rs 40,000 and Rs 30,000 over the first three years.
– Buyers of N1 category electric trucks will be eligible for incentives of up to Rs 1 lakh.
Phased shift to electric vehicles
The officials said that the policy outlines a gradual transition away from conventional fuel-powered vehicles.
From January 1, 2027, only electric autorickshaws will be newly registered in Delhi.
From April 1, 2028, registration of new petrol and CNG-powered two-wheelers will be discontinued, with only electric two-wheelers allowed to be registered, as per the PTI.
Scrapping incentive introduced
Owners of BS-IV or older four-wheelers who scrap their vehicles and purchase an electric vehicle will receive a Rs 1 lakh scrapping incentive.
However, the government clarified that hybrid vehicles will not be eligible for any subsidy under the new policy.
The policy also focuses on strengthening Delhi’s EV ecosystem by expanding charging stations, vehicle scrapping facilities and other supporting infrastructure, reported the PTI.
A dedicated online portal will also be launched to enable vehicle owners to apply for EV-related incentives and benefits.
The Delhi government said these measures are aimed at accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles and reducing air pollution across the capital.
