Commission seeks report on refusal to rent marriage hall to SC family in Erode

The National Commission for Scheduled Castes has asked the Superintendent of Police, Erode district, to submit an action-taken report regarding a complaint that the owner of a marriage hall in Perundurai had refused to rent out the venue to members of a Scheduled Caste community. In a complaint to the Commission, Vadivel Raman, founding president of Samuga Needhi Makkal Katchi, stated that on March 3, K. Rani and her family members from Koorapalayam village in Nasiyanur approached the owner of a marriage hall near Anna Silai on Bhavani Road in Perundurai to book the venue for a wedding reception for her 23-year-old son on March 15. However, after learning about their community, the hall owner, Ravi, allegedly refused to allow them to conduct the function. Based on the complaint, the Perundurai police registered a case under Section 3(1)(zc) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. All-India Tiger Estimation begins at Thanthai Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in Erode

Forest department staff involved in the All-India Tiger Estimation in Erode district | Photo Credit: Special Arrangement The first phase of the All-India Tiger Estimation-2026 (AITE-26) commenced in the Thanthai Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary under the Erode Forest Division on Tuesday (January 6, 2026). Ahead of the survey, Forest department staff were imparted training in wildlife enumeration methods. Following the training, the census work began in four forest ranges, Anthiyur, Bargur, Chennampatti and Thattakarai, all falling under the division. More than 150 department staff have been deployed for the exercise. They have been divided into several teams to carry out the census across 52 forest patrol beats. During the first three days, the census is being conducted using the line transect method, under which pugmarks, animal droppings, and direct sightings are recorded. Wildlife species such as tigers, leopards, gaur, elephants, and bears are being enumerated. Though the estimation primarily focuses on tiger reserves, forest divisions with the presence of co-predators and other carnivores are also being covered. Chennai: An elderly couple was allegedly murdered at their residence in Erode district of Tamil Nadu, police said on Friday. A detailed investigation is underway but prima facie it appears to be a case of robbery as around 10 sovereign gold jewellery were found missing from the house, the police added. The victims were identified as Ramaswamy (75) and his wife Bhakiyammal (65). The couple lives alone while their children live elsewhere. The incident at Sivagiri on Thursday came to light after repeated calls to the couple by their son went unanswered. The bodies of the man and woman were found with stab injuries.  “An investigation is underway. CCTV footage are being scanned. Led by committee president T. Thiruselvam, the Congress cadre stated that the Act, which was passed in Parliament, recently received presidential assent. They claimed that the Act undermines the autonomy of Waqf properties and facilitates the seizure of lands used by members of the Muslim community. According to them, the amendment grants full authority to the District Collector to determine whether a property is a Waqf property or not — a responsibility that was previously handled by the Waqf Tribunal. The police identified the victims as Chandran, 62, and Yuganandan, 50, both from Palakattur. Another worker, Chellappan, 52, of Chithode, who also experienced suffocation, was rescued and admitted to the hospital. According to the police, the lorry had transported the chemical from Hyderabad to a dyeing company in Tiruppur, where it is used in effluent treatment plants to remove suspended solids and improve water quality. On its return, the driver, Sundararaja, 48, from Tirunelveli district, took the vehicle to Sri Bharani Service Centre, where three workers entered the tanker to clean it. Additionally, five of the accused who were being questioned by the police were arrested on Monday (March 24, 2025) night. John alias Chanakya, 35, of Kitchipalayam in Salem city, was hacked to death by a four-member gang on the highway in front of his wife Saranya, while they were traveling by car from Salem to Tiruppur. All four members of the gang, who sustained injuries, are currently undergoing treatment at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. The next day, two other suspects, Saleem and Jeevan — believed to be among the accused — surrendered before a court. The ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu extended its winning run in elections on Saturday by emerging victorious in the Erode East bypoll with a massive margin against actor-politician Seeman`s NTK, a victory that should come as a major boost to the M K Stalin-led party ahead of next year`s Assembly elections. DMK`s V C Chandhirakumar trounced Naam Tamilar Katchi`s (NTK) M K Seethalakshmi by a margin of 91,558 votes. In the process, NTK, a Tamil nationalist organisation, forefeited deposit. With 44 other candidates– most of them independents, in fray, NOTA (None of the Above) grabbed the third place with 6,109 votes. Chandhirakumar polled 1,15,709 votes while Seethalakshmi came a distant second with 24,151 votes.
